Working quickly, Emma put the stack of documents back inside the safe, set the money on top and rested the drugs among it. She couldn’t hear anything from the hallway. Her own breath seemed so loud to her, she could hear nothing over it as she closed the heavy metal door and typed in the code, her fingers flying across the keypad, begging herself not to make a mistake now.

Maybe he’s just going to the pool, she told herself. It’s on this level.

Even if he was, that wouldn’t save her. There was no way out of this room that wouldn’t take her straight to him. She had to hide and wait. But the sleek leather sofas were raised on legs that would expose her if she hid behind them. She wouldn’t fit inside the shallow cabinets.

There was only one option.

Carefully, she pushed back the sturdy leather chair and ducked beneath Andrei Volkov’s desk.

It was an ostentatious piece and heavily built. It should hide her. But, like the sofas, it was raised off the floor. Her feet would be visible to anyone who walked in. It wouldn’t work.

Across the room the air shifted, and she heard the soft shushing sound of the door beginning to swing open.

Bracing her back against one side of the kneehole, she pressed the soles of her bare feet against the other side and raised herself until she was suspended above the ground.

Time seemed to stop. Emma was conscious of the muscles in her legs holding her up. Of her back and her palms pressing hard against the cool wood of the desk. And of the soft sound of someone walking across the room toward her.

Her lungs felt thin and airless.

If he walked behind the desk he’d see her. Odds were he’d kill her. Or at least, he’d try.

She froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs so loudly she was certain he’d hear it.

The footsteps stopped on the opposite side of the desk. For a moment there were no sounds of movement. Just the quick, tight rhythm of his breathing.

The air-conditioning chilled the sweat that ran down Emma’s face and dripped onto her torso as she used every sinew to hold herself perfectly still.

A faint tapping sound came from above her head. She frowned as she tried to place it.

It sounded like Grogan was…tapping his fingers.

Suddenly, he spoke, his tone harsh. “What are you doing?”

Emma suppressed a gasp.

Then he spoke again.

“You’re still outside? Is Volkov in the room with him?” Grogan asked.

He was on the phone.

“Don’t let him out of your sight. He’ll fucking wander off and it’ll be my arse in a sling,” Grogan growled. After another pause, he said, “Yeah, I’ve got to babysit some bint on the boat.” A pause and then, “Why? Because she might be babysitting us for someone. I’m still trying to figure it out. Anyway. Got to go. Let me know as soon as he comes out.”

Emma held her breath as he strode away from the desk.

There was a long pause.
