TEN

Later that afternoon, Josiah paddled up beside Zoey, still chewing on the words she had spoken to him that morning. They hadn’t had much of a chance to talk earlier because they had been too busy burying Patricia, breaking camp and keeping the various campers’ tempers on simmer, but finally they were on the water and heading toward the Nuka camp. Just keeping Lucas and Webster apart had been a major challenge. The two men had been literally at each other’s throats, and Josiah had physically had to separate them at one point as they had pointed fingers and blame at each other and traded insults.

The day was overcast, and gray clouds rolled through, bringing rain and mist that surrounded them as they traveled. He watched Zoey slice the water with her paddle and for a moment was swept away by the sheer tranquility of the setting. Beauty was all around them, despite the violence that had marred the trip, and she seemed to have found her niche in life here among the tall, rugged mountains and the cold, winding river. She fit in perfectly. He hoped he could find his own future as she had found hers. His plans were in such an uproar right now that it was hard to even picture where he would be in six months. He longed to return to the life he had known in the army, even though he knew it was an impossibility.

Zoey was beautiful. There was no other way to describe her. She wore no makeup, but her skin glowed with life, and her eyes mirrored her thoughts and animated her face in such a way that he never thought he would tire of looking at her. She had her brown hair French braided today, and he liked the way the style accented her face. Her love of sports had left her body toned, and her motions were smooth and seemed almost effortless. She was strong, despite her past abuse, both physically and emotionally. He wondered if she recognized those strengths, and if she had always been strong, or if her history of abuse had forced her to develop her fortitude and resilience.

He thought back to her words of encouragement again. He was glad she felt confident enough to speak her mind, and he admired the trait. In fact, the last thing he wanted was to try to guess her feelings or motives as they worked together. With Zoey, what he saw was what he got, and he liked that. In fact, compared to his relationship with his old girlfriend, he found Zoey’s behavior incredibly refreshing.

But was she right in her assessment? Had his father seen problems at Western and run, rather than staying to fix them? Was there a flaw in Chase and his business acumen that Josiah refused to acknowledge? The picture Zoey painted was difficult for him to take in, and yet some small part of him recognized that the man he had idolized all of his life was not so perfect after all.
