These three photographs show testing of the “Mae West” life vest, named after the famous actress. The vest was worn by all fliers on overwater flights. The two photographs at bottom demonstrate the combination of the “Mae West” and a small life raft. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s 1943 book Trail Blazing in the Skies, written by Shafto Dene, also showcased these images. (Author’s collection.)

One of the most important advancements in World War II was the development of self-sealing aircraft fuel tanks. In the photograph at top, men test the results of machine-gun fire on a conventional aluminum fuel tank and Goodyear’s Plioform bullet-puncture sealing construction. The bottom photograph shows tank construction. Note the supervisors in the background. These images were seen in the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s 1943 book Trail Blazing in the Skies, written by Shafto Dene. (Author’s collection.)
