Birthday Boy

Two years later, Ahnd was rising in the gang. He’d established himself as a strong member of the family with a wicked set of skills. But Ahnd’s twelfth birthday sucked. He didn’t even go home. He rarely went home anymore. Home was where his ass was, and that was rarely in his dad’s place.

His family, his true family, his street family, threw a bit of a party. It involved some gunshots, alcohol, and girls that made Ahnd feel uncomfortable. They threw in a cake freshly stolen from a bakery, too.

That was the good part of his birthday.

After the celebration, Ahnd was more than a little tipsy. He sat down on a bench, trying not to feel sick, and a girl sat next to him, putting her hand on his leg and rubbing it. He bit his lower lip and swallowed, lowering his head and seeing her chest. He took a deep breath and squirmed while some of the other boys laughed at him.

“Let’s have some fun,” Larry announced, flipping a couple of knives in his hand and catching them.

“Gerald and Tom, you’re up,” he said, holding the knives with their handles out.

Two teens jumped up from the benches, leaving their girls behind, and sauntered over to Larry, taking a knife.

“Have to stay in the circle. First one to draw blood wins.”

They entered the center circle of the basketball court, each on one side of the midcourt line, then began dancing on their feet, the blade extended. Tommy lunged forward, slashing to the left at Gerald’s right hand, but Gerald hopped back, almost going outside the circle. Gerald took the chance and leaped forward, coming down at an angle. Tommy didn’t dodge fast enough and the blade cut his Inves at the shoulder. Tommy slapped his shoulder, then looked at his hand and held it up. It had blood on it.

“Gerald wins,” Larry announced.

Another few pairs went up to battle while Ginny, the girl touching Ahnd, kept going higher on Ahnd’s leg. He grew so nervous at her touch that he could barely focus on the fight.

“Birthday boy Ahnd and Rusty, you’re up,” Larry called, much to Ahnd’s relief.

Ahnd jumped up and grabbed a knife, then entered the center circle. Rusty was taller than Ahnd, which should give Ahnd an advantage. Ahnd was also really fast. Usually. He was drunk, so a little slower today.

Ahnd started by bouncing from foot to foot, but then got it together enough to go into his fighting stance. He’d learned how to fight with a knife, so he kept his hands low like the other boys. Rusty didn’t play games and had no mercy. He thrust forward and Ahnd dodged…but he screwed up and dodged the wrong direction. The knife pierced his stomach and a pain like no other sliced through his body. Ahnd checked the wound, then stared in shock at Rusty as Rusty withdrew the blade. Ahnd couldn’t feel the blade slip out of his body, but he could feel that something was wrong.
