THE LAM

Vin woke with a kink in his neck and his right shoulder on fire. Light crept in through the windows of his car and made his eyes sting. He lifted his head to see if he could get a better view of where they were.

Joice groaned from the back seat. Her arm was strewn across his shoulder, weighing him down. She woke with a start when he pulled the lever on his seat and tilted up. The windows were fogged, but he could see trees and other vegetation growing through the burned timbers of a neighborhood that was consumed by wildfire four decades before.

Vin rubbed his eyes, but cursed silently when he poked himself with a metal finger. He just made up with Joice and didn’t want to hurt her feelings again. He opened the door and got out before letting a string of profanities slip. The morning air engulfed him, the dewy grass clinging to his boots. Boots Heiress thought to pack for him, in case anyone from Zip’s gang came after them while he was recovering.

Glad she went back for that bag.

Vin walked off to relieve himself and give Joice time to wake up. He followed a path between two crumbling foundations to a small clearing overlooking the city. Colville wasn’t big enough to have its own ALR, so it was a haven for criminals who were trying to escape judgement.

Joice yawned behind him as she walked up. “Any activity?”

“Nothing of note.” Vin glanced over his shoulder. “That’s the thing with these marginalized cities. There’s usually not much happening outside of the farms this early.”

Joice pulled her scanner out of her pocket, opened the camera and zoomed in to take a closer look. “Where’s the station to fill up your car?”

Vin pointed before realizing she wasn’t looking at him. “North side of town. One with the orange ball on top of the building.” Vin lowered his hand. “Not many of them left, but we can fill up again just outside of Leavenworth.”

“Hold on. There’s a patrol vehicle.” She grabbed his sleeve. “Looks like several of them.”

“Shit. They found the garage.”

“Did you leave pictures of the car on the wall or something?” Joice looked away from the camera.

“No, Heiress,” Vin said. “I didn’t leave pictures of my car all over the place.”

“Then who cares-“

“I have tools in the garage. Parts. Enough to suggest the car runs on gas. Only a few stations left. They’re probably just patrolling all of them.” Vin turned and walked back up the path.

Joice put her camera away and followed. “What’re we going to do then?”

“We need to find another way. We’ve only got about a hundred miles left on this tank.” He jumped in the car and closed the door.

Joice jumped into the passenger side. “We can take a rail.”

Vin shook his head. “We need IDs, plus they’ve probably got face recognition posts on the cameras looking for us by now.”

“Not in the cargo hold.” Joice smiled.

Vin scrunched his eyebrows together. “They bio-scan the cargo.
