Chapter 46

Dr Semir drove to the top of the road and parked the SUV facing a bank of trees. Fortunately, there were few cars and no one else around after the summer solstice celebrations.

“There is nowhere on this planet where time does not exist. The best I can do is take you back to the tunnels to ask the Minocho for help.”

“You have met them as well?” asked Nathalie.

“Yes, we often see their orbs of light in the tunnels. So, have they helped you already?”

“No, I mean have you talked to them?”

“Not personally, but we have people who visit here – mediums who can talk to them.”

Everyone paused.

“Tomorrow, on 30 June, a French mission will leave with six persons to explore a planet in a parallel universe. Two of us are survivors of that expedition, and it was Nathalie who invited us to the planet.”

Nathalie took over the explanation from Claude. “The problem is that we have come back one day early. We think that when we reach the departure time tomorrow, we will go back in a time loop and do the trip again. Does that make any sense to you?”

“Not really. If you are in this dimension, you will stay here. But I can hide you in the tunnels tonight and you can come out after the others leave. We can even provide you with pizza, if you want. After that, will you agree to give the foundation here a full briefing on what you saw in the tunnels and allow my companions to ask you questions via a video conference call?”

“Yes,” Claude replied solemnly. “We realise that this expedition will have huge scientific interest, although up to now it has been kept secret. We also realise that we will have to report back to our respective governments, so an independent briefing might in fact help us.”

“I agree with all that, if you can make a four seasons pizza for me!” Anita replied and everyone laughed.

Dr Semir drove them up to the main entrance to the tunnels and told them to wait in the car while he went to get a collection of hard hats for them to wear. Then he went back to the office and told his staff to close the tunnels to the public from 6pm. No one would be allowed in except his personnel.

“Once the tourists have left, we will take you inside to a chamber with a big ceramic stone we call K2,” Dr Semir explained when he got back to the car. “There are seats in there and plenty of room for you to sleep. If any of you want to use the toilets, they are down there on the left.” He pointed as they all got out of the SUV. “Make sure you are back here in fifteen minutes.”

Semir went back to his office to turn on the security system located above the ceramic stone. Then he got an assistant to order three pizzas and a local goulash dish for delivery in an hour.
