Chapter 18

At home, I go straight from the garage to my room. Seeing the covered Corvette doesn’t help my anger. I’d always thought Ron never sold it because he loved my mother and wanted to hold on to her memory. Now I realize he couldn’t. The car must be in my name. And that was the one thing that kept me respectful to him. I thought he loved her, but no, he’s just one unbelievable greedy bastard.

Lying on my bed, I stare at the ceiling and the fan slowly rotating above me. I want to break something or someone. My fists practically twitch with the need. Anger rolls through me in waves so forceful I have to get a grip before I do something much worse than trespassing.

To calm myself, I force my thoughts from the last four bitter years to Harmony. I can’t change the past, but maybe I can find her. I’ve spent over the last month with her, yet in reality, I accepted her presence and went along with most of her schemes but never put much thought into our friendship. So trying to piece together what I found in the pool house makes little sense along with who she was living with and why. I’ve pondered she may be a runaway. Or she’s in some sort of trouble. But nothing my imagination comes up connects logically. And my worry has me guilty I never paid much attention to her before now. Well except for that kiss. I paid a whole hell of a lot of attention to her then. Perhaps if I had paid more attention, finding her wouldn’t seem so impossible.

And that kiss…something about our kiss changed everything. I’m determined to find her. Determined to make sure she’s safe. Though the longing, strong and deep, inside of me wants more, seeing her safe would be enough. I’m like a comic book vigilante and she’s crime. I have to find her.

With nothing else to go on, I pull the maps from my back pocket and stare at them instead of the ceiling. I look at each of them closely. Some depict the waterways, other’s land, and some of them are repeats, but all of them have that star in the exact same place.

Her purple star amid the waterways of the Everglades makes the least sense. Harmony interested in fashion makes sense. Interest in a huge swamp does not.

I flip the map over in my hand. The opposite side describes the flora and fauna of the Everglades. Amid all of the description, I almost miss the purple underlined cypress tree. The interest in a specific tree, the chicken scratches, and the star on the map add to my confusion. I angle the map, turn it, and try to understand those scratches.

Suddenly, I realize the messy, long words are upside down. Slowly I decipher them. My home forever? I grab another map. Same star in the same place but this time the scrawl says, don’t lose sight of your goal or you’ll live here forever.
