Going Bush

Iwas prepared for Russell to be absent from the Sound. Though he tired of life in the wilderness, he was far more successful at the isolated, bare-bones lifestyle than many. He never lost his marbles from spending too much time alone in the cove, otherwise known as cabin fever or “going bush.” Anyone who has ever spent an entire year in Desolation Sound, or lived anywhere for an extended time alone in the woods, knows that glorious, social summers can quickly turn into winters of terrifying isolation. It was never a secret that the winters in the Sound were treacherous. Human error usually played the starring villainous role, weather the supporting, in so many deaths during the dark season: the shooting of Gus Bloom, the plane-crash death of his son William, the drowning of a hippie from the Desolation Sound commune. All of those deaths were sudden and dramatic. Going bush was the creeping killer of Desolation Sound.
