âWhat is kiss-ing?â Curiosity piques my interest. Heat and color have stained Roseâs face. I touch a hand to one of her cheeks, and she shows me her teeth.
âWhat is this called?â I move my hand from her cheek to one corner of her upturned mouth. It appears to be such a similar gesture, though I now know it does not come naturally to me.
âA smile. It means Iâm happy.â
âHappy.â Kovel repeats the word as if heâs never heard it before.
âYep.â And she does it againâa beautiful, heart-wrenching smi-ll.
âSmi-ll,â I practice, committing the word to memory. âSmile.â Committing the upward curve of Roseâs lips and the flash of Roseâs teeth to memory. I could have captured a likeness of her smile had she not thrown our tablet out of the tree.
âFor someone who doesnât know what kissing is,â she says, bringing me back into the moment, âyouâre starting very well.â
âI am?â I straighten my shoulders, not precisely sure what I am so pleased about but pleased, nonetheless.
âYes.â She laughs, breathlessly loud. Whatever this kiss-ing is, I like it already. I like that it makes Rose happy.
Perhaps it will make Kovel happy, too.
âA hand to the face or to the back of the neck is perfect.â She glances toward Kovel to check he is watching us, then shuffles forward a few inches and links a hand behind my neck. Immediately, her touch ignites my pheromone glands, and a shiver races down my spine.
She breathes deep, leaning closer, and I freeze, terrified that if I move I will ruin the moment.
When her lips touch mine, they are so soft I could almost be imagining the sensation. Motionless, I watch as she touches her lips to mine again and again. Just a brush, softness and wanting all mixed into three barely-there touches.
Beside me, Kovel shifts uneasily.
Rose ignores him, putting just enough space between us that she can look into my eyes. âYes?â she asks, and I have never wanted to answer a question so quickly in my entire life.
âAssuredly, Fairest Female of this Planet. Akh⦠I mean, Rose.â
Another laugh and another smile. That she can laugh and smile at the same time is a skill I never imagined could exist. I wish to learn it.
Her gaze returns to my lips, and I remain still in anticipation. Lip-touching is not a custom of the Arrok, nor of any other species I have encountered, but I want to know everything about it.
My body ignites with heat as Rose licks the center of my bottom lip before biting gently, trapping my lip between her blunt teeth. It does not hurt. Desire and longing fight for my attention while my scent fills my nose, mingled indeterminately with the scent of Roseâs own sweet, heady arousal.
She takes another deep breath, her eyes closing, and I cannot help myself. I lick her bottom lip, attempting to do to her what she has just done to me.
I feel rather than see Kovel move closer.
Rose continues to ignore him. Evidently, she has found the perfect way to infuriate him, for nothing frustrates Kovel more than being ignored.
