While still a relatively understudied aspect of this research, there is also growing evidence that anti-LGBT harassment and other aspects of hostile school environments may have academic as well as emotional consequences for students. Both the Massachusetts and Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Surveys found that sexual minority students are about four times as likely as other students to stay home from school because they feel unsafe there (16% vs. 3.5% in the Massachusetts survey and 15% vs. 4% in Vermont), and 29 percent of students responding to GLSEN’s latest survey said they’ve skipped school and/or classes for similar reasons. Moreover, GLSEN found that the LGBT students they surveyed who had experienced physical harassment had grade-point averages that were a half-grade (.5) lower on average than other students, and that students who had experienced verbal harassment had GPAs that were three-tenths of a point lower, on average.
