Exposure

With all of the sophisticated metering systems built into today’s digital cameras, exposure remains one of the most common problems with photos—they’re frequently too dark or too bright. The Exposure control lets you monitor the overall brightness of the image and it has a greater effect in the highlight region than on the part of the image in the shadows. If an image is badly underexposed, be cautious when increasing the exposure as too much exposure may introduce noise (graininess) in the shadow details. Figure 5.19 is a close-up of the image recovered by Auto Tone (see Figure 5.18) and the noise that occurs when the pixels in the shadows are pushed make the details visible.
