LUNCH WAS ALWAYS THE quietest time of day at the Hampton House and Adele looked forward to a few moments with her sisters.

She enjoyed the quiet and space of her new home, but still missed the conversations, noise, and bustle that she had grown up with.

Today, Adele needed to impress on her sisters not to act rashly and to find something to fill their days so that they wouldn’t need to wed as a means of providing for themselves.

“Adele!” Heidi gasped as her sister walked into the dining area. “I didn’t expect to see you here today.”

“I thought I’d come and have lunch with you, Olga and Fanny.”

“Olga’s in her room sewing something,” Heidi said, wrinkling her nose. “Fanny is working with Mr. Ben. She loves working with the children at the church.”

“Is she actually teaching?” Adele took a seat, and Heidi joined her.

“I believe she’s working with the younger ones while old Ben does the harder things like math with the older students.”

Adele smiled. “I’m glad she’s keeping busy. What about you?”

Heidi shrugged. “I like working here,” she said. “I’m in no hurry to leave if Olive will keep me.”

“And Papa?”

“He’s still working at the livery with Mr. Darwin.”

“I never saw Papa as one to work in a livery. He was always more bookish.”

“Yes, bookish, but not practical, much like Fanny.”

“Adele. Nice to see you,” Ellen Hampton walked toward the table. “You seem to be keeping well.” The woman’s eyes sparkled as she took in the fashionable dress Adele was wearing.

“I am well,” Adele replied. “Has it been busy? Are you able to manage with all of us scattered so much?”

Ellen’s smile was bright. “We girls seem to have it under control, and Heidi is a great help. Can I get you anything?”

Adele opened her mouth to refuse then remembered she was going to have lunch here. “I’ve come for lunch,” she offered a smile. “Can Heidi join me?”

Ellen looked around the room where only one man sat at a corner table. “I think we can handle it,” she laughed. “Heidi, have a nice visit with your sister. You look well, Adele,” she finished turning and heading toward the man in the corner.

“I don’t think they need me here,” Heidi said, leaning across the table as if she was sharing a secret.

“They won’t send you away?” Adele’s eyes widened.

“No, but I’ve been thinking about what I’d like to do.” She dropped her eyes. “It seems that since you married that saloon owner, we don’t have to rush to take a groom.” She lifted her eyes. “Not that you would let us meet a single man in this town while you were here.”

“I,” Adele started to protest. “I was looking out for you. There is no reason for you to marry the first person who asks now that I have an allowance. And ‘that man’ is Beau Alder, my husband.”

Heidi dipped her head. “I wasn’t trying to be offensive. It’s just that everything happened so fast. I haven’t gotten used to it yet.
