Chapter Ten
The light bounced off the milky-white emptiness of the ragersâ eyes, and my heart dropped out of my asshole. Then I yanked my gun out of its holster and fired off four rounds as I stumbled backward.
The first two rounds hit the same rager twice, both in the face, and the freak went down like a sack of shit. The other two rounds clipped the next closest one and took off its ear then part of its jaw. There were still easily six more of the fuckers, maybe more, but I didnât exactly have time to count them.
Not like this, not like this. I refused to fucking die in a stinking pit on a mission to save some woman I didnât even know.
Indignant rage powered me to my feet, and the crumpled heaps of the first two ragers tripped the others and allowed me a couple of seconds head start.
Good enough.
Oh, fuckâs sake, now I was starting to think like Grace.
My legs worked on autopilot, devoid of any conscious thought, and just ran. I didnât know where I was going, but I knew I needed to go. I shone my flashlight on the ground ahead of me and saw it was a large curved pipe of a sewer, thankfully dried, but caked and crusted in a brown substance I didnât want to process.
Save for a few clumps of unspeakable brown stuff, I had a clear run ahead of me, so I turned my gun backward and fired off another few rounds into the horde of freaks.
I managed to hit another one, but it was in the chest. The force made it stumble and trip, which bought me a little more space, but that freak would get up after it had been trampled and keep coming for me. Another bullet pierced the glassy white eyeball of another bastard, and its arms flailed as the creature hit the deck.
More freaks tripped over the properly dead corpse.
They were fast, but they werenât that smart.
I turned back to focus on my escape. In front of me was what looked like an endless shit coated tunnel, but I didnât have time to panic or catastrophize. It was run or die. Easy choice if you ask me.
So, I ran. And I ran. And I kept running.
It sounded like the horde were getting further away, but I didnât dare to hope, it could have just been the sound of blood rushing in my ears that drowned them out. I couldnât afford to get hopeful and complacent, so I forced myself to just keep running as if they were right on my heels.
After what seemed like forever, different side tunnels started to appear off the main one. Some had chunky metal bar doors covering them completely, and others were wide open.
I took a quick glance inside one of the open ones and could have sworn I saw bedding.
But who the fuck would live down here?
I kept powering on, until I saw one tunnel with an open door. Instead of just bars, this one had been boarded up, too.
