Chapter Nine

I froze in my tracks as I scanned the space ahead of us, and my eyes widened in surprise. I didn’t know what I was expecting inside the wall of the NSS headquarters, but it wasn’t the beautifully manicured garden with trimmed topiaries and water features that stood before me. It was like stepping into a different dimension, and I stood blinking at the colorful flowers and chirping birds for a long moment before I could process anything else.

“It’s… beautiful,” Malika whispered.

“I didn’t realize they could garden,” Carl added in a sarcastic tone.

“Yet there are no food plants in sight,” Sasha pointed out. “It’s all just for aesthetics.”

“A show of power,” I surmised. “Probably intended to make the agents feel elevated above the populace.”

“That is kind of sick,” Malika said, and her face wrinkled with disgust under her fake beard. “Especially in comparison to what we just saw outside in the city…”

The sidewalks formed a circle along the edge of the garden space, and intersecting lines connected each structure together through the greenery. There were several small buildings tucked behind the landscaping, but it was hard to see their entrances with the trimmed bushes blocking the view. Everything looked clean and well maintained, and if I didn’t know any better, I would almost have thought the post-apocalyptic city beyond the walls of the headquarters had been little more than a mirage. The contrast was glaring, and it made me sick to my stomach.

It seemed the NSS were capable of living in comfort even if the residents of the city were forced to live in squalor.

These selfish bastards were in for a rude awakening soon.

I would make sure of it.

I glanced around at the multiple buildings tucked against the wall surrounding the complex, but it was difficult to ascertain what their functions were with the greenery obscuring any signs possibly posted on the exteriors. The sound of men’s laughter caught my attention, and I turned to see two NSS agents walking along a sidewalk from the building to the far right toward the one directly in front of us. The building they were walking away from looked like a small apartment complex or barracks. It was several stories tall and had illuminated windows that randomly dotted the face.

I followed the agents with my gaze until they disappeared into the central building, and I jerked my head in their direction before I led my companions toward it. I squared my shoulders and worked the muscle in my jaw as I prepared myself for the next set of interactions with the bastards who operated the headquarters, and our feet echoed through the garden as we took the sidewalk through the center of the landscaped area.

As we drew closer to the entrance, I spotted a sign marking the building as the Administration Center, and I knew we were going to the right place. We needed to blend in with the other agents, but the chance that the items we needed were located inside was high.
