Fear and Three Ways to Play It
It’s typically assumed that the guards in the Stanford prison study were callous, cruel, even sadistic by nature. And it’s true that some guards dealt with the pressure to perform by doing whatever they could to break the prisoners down—everything from degrading them verbally, to taking away their mattresses and leaving them to sleep on the hard concrete, to locking them in “solitary confinement.” These behaviors were widely publicized. But what is less widely known about the Stanford prison study is that not all of the guards reacted this way. In fact, according to reports of the study, the guards used their power in three distinct ways, and they emerged in equal numbers.
