Chapter Eleven

Anika came awake to find that the sun had begun to rise and shine through her kitchen window. As she turned her head slightly, a twinge in her neck punished her for her awkward sleeping position. Ignoring it, she stretched the taut muscle and smiled at the feel of a cotton T-shirt beneath her cheek. Isaac’s chest rose and fell, his heartbeat a steady staccato. His breathing remained deep and steady, one of his arms keeping her anchored against him.

They’d dozed off after a romantic comedy marathon in front of the TV. Stretched out on her couch, he slept with his head propped up on the arm. Anika had lain on top of him, head resting on his chest, sleeping better than she had in months. Perhaps that had something to do with her vivid dreams, which she knew to be dormant memories springing forth in her mind like the first blossoms of spring.

Now, she knew of two past lives she had lived with Isaac—as Aurora Barton and Isaac Parker, and before then, as Black Ian and Alys Black. She giggled—he had once been her very own ‘Fabio’. The lives of Alys and Ian seemed like something straight out of one of her historical romance novels.

Despite having been filled with hardship, their lives in medieval Scotland had come to a much happier end than Aurora and Isaac’s had. The memories had pieced themselves together throughout the night, giving her the entire picture of her life with Black Ian.

He had returned from King James’s campaign against the rebel lairds and received his knighthood, along with her hand in marriage. Both James and Margaret had approved the union, and what had followed had been a life of peace and happiness. As a wife—and eventually, a mother of three strong boys—Alys could no longer serve as a lady-in-waiting to the queen, but had remained a close adviser and friend to Margaret until her death. Ian had served faithfully as a knight until age hindered him from using a sword.

Their deaths had been peaceful, caused by age instead of violence. However, Aurora’s end had been anything but. She still had not unearthed that particular memory, and if she believed Isaac, it could happen at any moment.

But it didn’t matter whether or not she remembered. The only thing she cared about was helping Isaac find a piece of the relic so that his curse could be broken. Having experienced through her dreams what life with him could be like, she didn’t want to lose it. If, at the end of this week, she found herself forced to return to an existence of loneliness, she didn’t think she’d be able to bear it.

Beneath her, he began to stir, drawing her attention back to the present. He stretched with a groan, blinking and turning his face away from the light filtering through her blinds.

“Morning already?” he mumbled.

“I’m afraid so,” she replied. “Someone should have gone to sleep earlier.”

He chuckled, the sound made deeper by the clinging remnants of sleep.
