MAMA gave the party another moment to take in what she had said. It both made sense and didn’t. Will felt like he almost got the punchline to joke, then realized he didn’t several times in a row.

“Your Relic is your son?” he asked after the silence had gone on for too long.

“Maybe you’d like to elaborate?” Maxine said.

The Mother Tree let an amused smirk cross her green face.

“Of course,” she said, the lights in her eyes angled down at the adventurers like they were children gathered for story time.

The fireflies floating on the still air lit up the area like a set of twinkle lights.

“All living things are my children,” Mama started. “After doing my work for the multiverse and taking some time off, I created the Acreage and decided to settle down.”

“And create an entire reality,” Will commented.

“Home is where the heart is, and I decided to plant mine,” the Mother Tree replied. “After setting the formation of the realm into motion I needed to fill it with life. Let birdsong waft through the tree boughs, hear the bustle of young cultures climbing up against the odds. Feel the pulse of the world through every blade of grass, every leaf, and every root. I used my Relic to bring life to the Acreage, and once the seeds sprouted, I let them grow on their own. My job was done, and so was the Relic’s.”

The Oddstar crew was trying their best to follow along. They said nothing and waited for Mama to continue.

“That was when I chose to give my Relic a life of its own,” she said, picking up the cue.

Shelly tilted her head like a curious puppy.

“What do you mean?”

“My Relic,” she reiterated. “I breathed life into it so that it could experience what it had given so many others. Thus, my son was born. Filius.”

“Filius?”

“He’s a titan,” the Mother Tree explained. “A mighty being made of the earth itself. Most importantly, he’s a pure and innocent spirit.”

“Wow,” Shelly said.

The others gazed upwards, minds swimming with images of some kind of enormous rock golem or an ent from Lord of the Rings.

“So now, your Relic is alive?” Will clarified. “And it’s your son?”

Mama nodded.

“Yes,” she said. “He is a sweet child, devoid of any cruel intentions or hateful notions. Therefore, he’s a little vulnerable to the world and that’s why I had to protect him. But now, war has found its way into our home, into the Acreage—and it is no longer safe for him here.”

“War?” Will repeated.

“You mean the corruption stuff?” asked Gary. “With the zombie bitches and that scary lady?”

The Mother Tree replied with a solemn nod, eyes closed in silent grief.

“That’s right,” she answered. “Now the corruption is spreading and I fear that I can’t stop it on my own. It cannot get its clutches on Filius. If he is taken, all is lost. All living things depend on the safety of the Life Relic—and I love my son very much. I will die before I let anything happen to him.
