The Grannies

June

“I don’t like the idea of coming here without a solid plan,” said June. She glanced around Samantha’s yard uneasily as they walked up the sidewalk to her front door.

Samantha’s house wasn’t anything like June imagined. The yard was surrounded by a white picket fence, which was flanked by well-tended rose bushes. The sidewalk was made from bricks laid in a pretty chevron pattern, and colorful flower beds lined each side. The house had a tiny wooden porch, where gardening tools were stored on quaint wooden shelves next to the cottage-style front door.

How interesting.

“You and your solid plans.” said Ellie, as they approached the doorway. “Sometimes you just have to wing it. Remember, this is an attempt to help Samantha see reason. And, in case that doesn’t work, it’s a reconnaissance mission. We’re going to scope out the house, and then use anything we find to help us decide on what to do next. And, of course, if an opportunity presents itself, we will make the most of it.”

June nodded, frowning, then rang the doorbell.

“Did you notice that she gardens?” Ellie whispered.

“I did!” June replied, as the door opened.

Samantha stood on the other side, looking surprisingly casual in a crisp white fitted T-shirt, jeans, and a low-slung ponytail. She looked shocked to see them for a moment. Then she got hold of herself and narrowed her eyes. “What are you doing here?” she asked.

Her tone was less hostile than June expected, which made her feel just the slightest bit more hopeful than she had a moment before.

“We’re here to talk, if you’re open to it,” said Ellie. “Whether you believe it or not, we really were trying to help Maddie, and we’d just like the opportunity to come in and smooth things over. Might I say, by the way, that you have a lovely garden.”

Samantha’s expression softened. “Thank you,” she said. “You can come in, just for a moment. I brought some work home with me, and I need to get started on it. It will probably take me the whole weekend to get it finished.”

“I thought Friday evenings were for relaxing,” Ellie said.

“Not if you want to get ahead and stay ahead.”

“I see.”

“Well, come in already,” Samantha said. “We’re wasting time.” She turned around and walked into the house. Ellie and June shrugged at each other and followed her inside.

June looked around. It was a single-story cottage, but vaulted ceilings and stark white walls made it feel larger and airier than it was. At first glance, everything seemed a bit sterile, with lots of clean lines, stainless steel, and expensive, uncomfy-looking sofas. But when she looked closer June could see softer touches. The red-brick fireplace had a wooden mantel lined with family photos. Vases of fresh-cut flowers sat on the end tables, the coffee table, and the kitchen island.

A colorful landscape painting hung on the living room wall, and, on the wall just to June’s right, there were two framed pieces of artwork that looked as though they were done by a child’s hand.
