CHAPTER 9

Ethan

I was standing at the bar keeping an eye Trevor and Maya, ready to make my move if I saw Trevor do anything stupid.

"Hey, stranger," Jessica's voice came from behind me.

I spun around but didn't see the young girl I was expecting. Jessica had grown up. She looked even more like her mother, with her long flowing dark hair, and tortoiseshell framed glasses. Her braces were gone, replaced by a confidence that came with maturity.

“Look at you," I said. "How long has it been?"

We hugged and she hopped up on one of the barstools next to me.

"Well, I think the last time I was here was three or four years ago. You don't look any different."

“How's college going? What are you majoring in?"

I was trying to pay attention to her as she spoke, but she was sitting on the wrong side of me so I kept having to turn around to get a glimpse of Maya.

"All right, Ethan, what gives? I haven't seen you in forever, but I can tell your mind is on something else. Or maybe a someone else? Don’t tell me having your little sister home isn't important enough for you to ignore your flavor of the week."

I felt bad hearing her say that. Jessica was the closest thing I would ever have to a sister. For as long as I had been going to the resort, even when I was a teen, and Jess was just a little kid, she was there. I should’ve been paying more attention to her, but I couldn't get Maya out of my head.

"I'm sorry, Jess. It's just there is this woman, and—"

"And?" She asked. "Let me guess, this one is different. I can tell." She pointed at my face and moved her index finger back and forth in front of my eyes. "I can see it right there. This one means something to you." She lifted herself up in her seat and looked towards the direction I had been looking. "So which one is she? And why aren't you with her?"

"She's over there, in the booths." I stepped to the other side of Jess's stool so that we could both easily look in the same direction. But when I looked where Trevor and Maya were sitting before, she was gone.

My stomach sank. How could I lose her? I quickly turned to scan the crowd for any sign of her.

"She was just over there. She was talking to her ex-boyfriend."

"Her ex-boyfriend? And you’re sitting all the way over here? Are you stupid?"

"I was giving her space. I didn't think she would want me there. I figured whatever they were talking about was none of my business. But I was keeping an eye on them to make sure he didn't try anything."

"Try anything? Seriously, what is wrong with you? I know you, Ethan. I know that behind that macho façade you're just a big softy. So if you've met someone and they mean what I think she means to you, and you think that she’s special, then you should go and be with her.
