It hurts to be here.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say it feels like little pieces of shrapnel aren’t cutting. The last year I’ve pushed this feeling down. The last year I’ve avoided any place we went to as a family. I’ve avoided being like this with my kids. But I can’t do that anymore. I know this. Sydney showed me that.

I feel a light squeeze on my hand as we enter the whale room. This was our favorite room in the museum. The only room she liked. It’s as if we are beneath the water, but for me, it’s like I’m drowning. I’m going under. The sound of my kids’ laughter and squeals are muted against the hum in my ears. Then I feel it. Her soft caress again.

She’s my life raft.

When I turn to her, she gives me a tight smile while mouthing, “It will be okay.” She lifts me through the murky abyss, bringing me back to the surface.
