Chapter Twelve

Vanessa

After I ignored Jordan in P.E. I was quick to text Harper and arranged to meet her by the library since she had said she’d drive me home. I didn’t want to risk waiting around after class and running into Jordan. Harper came with Felix and Tony following her. I didn’t ask why they weren’t with him. I already knew it was because of me and I felt very guilty. It was okay for me to be mad, or sad, or whatever the Hell I was feeling towards him, but I hadn’t meant for his friends to get so involved.

I saw Phoebe and Chris waiting by Tony’s truck. They were both leaning against it as they talked. I couldn’t help but nudge Harper when Chris’s eyes lit up as he made Phoebe laugh.

“How long has that been a thing?” I asked as we trailed behind Felix and Tony. Harper snorted.

“Literally since the day they met,” she rolled her eyes at me, “Wait a few more days, he gets more determined every day.” Tony had obviously seen them because he straightened up and started walking so quickly we had to jog to keep up. I watched Tony frown as Chris put his arm around Phoebe with a grin.

“Hey,” Chris greeted us. Phoebe looked tense.

Tony glared at him but Chris stayed stubbornly put until Phoebe cleared her throat quietly.

“You guys all set, then?” She asked and stepped away from Chris. Again, I watched him try not to look disappointed. He grinned at us before heading in the direction of his car. Phoebe stared after him, but forced a smile when Tony opened the door for her.

Harper told me that we weren’t going to go straight to my house. We were going to make a stop at Jordan’s place and get to the bottom of what he had said to his mom. Phoebe rolled her eyes at her.

“This probably isn’t the greatest idea.” She sighed and tapped Tony on the shoulder. “Could you swing by the house before you guys ambush Jordan? I have a lot of homework already.”

Tony glanced at her. “How do you already have homework, Phoebe?” He asked her incredulously but still dropped her at home. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.

“Harper, this is a terrible idea.” I told her, but instead she turned to look at me.

“No,” she said, “This is a fantastic idea! I want to know what the Hell is going on! We can all see how much he’s into you. The only ones who can’t seem to see it are the both of you.” I could tell Harper was frustrated. Felix, Phoebe and Tony were oddly quiet. I think we all understood that Harper needed to work some of her aggression out of her system before we saw Jordan.

“You know,” I tried explaining again, “it’s not like Jordan and I have been hanging out for a long time, Harper. I literally met him this morning. I don’t think we need to rush all of this...” I let myself trail off as the truck slowed by a house with a white BMW in the driveway.
