TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

EARTH DATE: 02.05.2020

LOCATION: New York City

REGION: New York, USA, Earth

The universe snapped back into place around Krishna, barely controllable rage suffusing his being.

~Why do you keep running away, Morden?~

The group was inside a dark and decidedly filthy warehouse. Krishna didn’t know where, but judging by the materials and the electrical systems, it was somewhere on Earth in the late twentieth to early twenty-first century.

“I do not ‘run away’,” Morden scoffed from where he stood a few meters away, still holding the man he’d captured.

Morden’s mind was too difficult for Krishna to probe—at least without the Reaver realizing what was happening—but his companions were less capable, so he slipped a tendril into Junius’s mind, drawing out the identity of the man the Reavers had taken.

Matt, Amanda’s betrothed. What a waste of energy.

Shifting his vision beyond the three dimensions the beings around him were restricted to, he peered through the walls and confirmed their time and location. New York City, Earth, 2020.

But not the universe he was from. It was evident in the isotopes and chirality of the atomic structures around him.

~Then this was a strategic retreat?~ Krishna said in a mocking tone. ~You said we were attacking the Magus’s ship in order to draw her out. Not that you were hoping for a hostage.~

“I improvised,” Morden said as he pushed Matt toward Zenobia. “We’ll send them an ultimatum. Tangel and Amanda come alone, or the redhead’s lover dies.”

If Krishna hadn’t already consumed the body he’d been using as a disguise, he would have groaned. ~I could have taken them out. You just needed to keep Amanda under wraps for a few more minutes. The Nexus security was on its way, and I could have dropped shards into them.~

“Shards?” Morden scowled. “Is that what you did to my Reavers? I can see bits of you inside them.”

“Morden, I thought I could smell your stench,” Matt sneered as Zenobia held him in a Magical vice—though she was unable to physically harm him due to the energy shield that protected the man. “Are you talking to that thing? Is that glowing octopus ball a person?”

Krishna adjusted his physical appearance, taking on the form of a large man with fists the size of pitchers. “A person of sorts, yes,” he growled. “One who is thinking of ending you so we can focus on our real problem.”

“Go for it.” A smirk formed on Matt’s lips, and he glanced at Morden. “Dingleberry here has captured me before, and I got free. I’ll do it again, and Amanda will get her opportunity to finally end him. You too, if you’re not careful.”

Krishna shook his head, turning to glare at Morden. “First, you take me to the Nexus, then here, when we could have finished them off on Kapalicarsi! I thought your goal was to gain access to the stasis shield technology Tangel controls?”

“It is, but if we don’t take care of Amanda, she’ll chase us across as many universes as it takes. And you know as well as I that we picked up reinforcements on both of those stations.
