Chapter Eight

February

2-1-10

Monday

I got to CIFLE and we immediately had our monthly meeting. Ms. Chee was wearing a blue dress shirt exactly like mine. I thought the coincidence propitious. Mr. Lee of General Affairs office spoke some English for the first time, it seems. We cheered his speech.

At 11 am we began the trainee’s teaching presentations. They were all very good. They seemed to get better as each one progressed to the next.

At lunch we had a sweet and sour sauce with yellow rice. Jeff used some really foul language about “whores.” I left the table first.

During the judging of the presentations I sat between Peter and Jonathan. Jonathan and Lexi were chatting away. Each evaluation was criticized in detail by the others, but Sally and I thought it best not to criticize too much. I made only positive remarks.

Bok Young and GiGi caught my attention especially. GiGi seemed so natural, like an actress, in front of the other teachers. I mentioned this to Peter at the end of the day. He agreed with my observation.

After a chicken dinner at home I called Amy. We went for coffee and bagels at the corner Angels in US coffee shop. Scott E. was there with his girlfriend and her friend. Amy and I walked and talked. We went to her graduate office. She said I reminded her of her father.

Tuesday

I got up and got to CIFLE at about 8:45 am. I didn’t drink coffee for a while.

I had to teach two hours of drama techniques. The students were very cooperative. I told them I was going to have a very non-stressful two hours with them and give them plenty of time to prepare the lesson.

At lunch Scott E. told a joke about having wives for richer and for poorer—4 + 4, that’s 8 wives. I was the only one to laugh at his joke—he seemed to appreciate that.

There was a lecture from Prof. Davies from Yonsei University. He talked about internet tools and blending the English lessons that way. His speaking style was very good and I talked to him some afterwards. I think I might use his method, but first I will check with the leadership.

My ring finger of my left hand has a nail cuticle problem. When I played guitar for the class I made a lot of mistakes owing to that pain.

We gathered for a beef and pork dinner with all the trainees after I turned in my grades and sample papers to evidence my teaching. Peter and I were driven by Mi Ae and we got to a dead end and got there late. We got gifts from the trainees and Peter said a few words. Sally drove me and Peter home.

Wednesday

I woke up at 8 am and took a shower. While I was taking a shower, Scott D. called me on Skype. I had left on my computer overnight. I couldn’t answer Scott D.’s call as I was just in the shower without much time. I hoped he wasn’t worried.
