Chapter 12
"What am I gonna do?" Winnie whispered, as she poked a long stick at the glowing embers of the dying fire. She was alone for the first time since she'd confirmed her suspicions about Paul's insanity.
He was nuts. Certifiable in a court of lawâan appropriate way for an attorney to go insane.
She raked her fingers through her hair, wishing for a hot shower and a gallon of her favorite conditioner. Paul would be back at any moment, so she had to get her thoughts together before then.
"Okay, Winnie. Think." She laid a small log on the red-hot coals, watching it ignite immediately. The yellow-orange flames licked up the sides of the log until it was completely engulfed.
She chewed a ragged fingernail, forcing herself to think about the changes Paul had undergone just before and after his transformation into Sam. This was all so strange.
Could Paul summon Sam at will? The thought made her blink in surprise. Was this alter ego capable of doing the primitive things he'd been doing all these weeks? It was far from likely that the Paul she knew would be able to handle a gun with the expertise Sam had displayed. Riding a horse was even questionable, and she'd certainly seen him do that.
Mental illness was a powerful force, but could it give a person the knowledge and skill necessary to perform acts he'd never done before? The fact that Paul went to all the trouble to insert blue contacts when he was himselfâ
"Uh-oh." Winnie's heart raced and she felt cold all over, despite the warm day and the hot fire. She had no way of knowing who the real Paul Weathers was. Which persona was the real Paul? Rolling her eyes, she rubbed the back of her neck. That was a stupid question to ask. She'd seen the real Paul Weathers in action during her divorce hearing.
Or was he really a combination of the two personalities? Sam and Paul? Or maybe Paul number one, the barracuda lawyer, and Paul number two, the lover. For some reason, this thought warmed Winnie. She drew a deep breath, then held it a few moments before releasing it. She sure had a knack for picking the wrong man.
Wrong man? Guilt welled within her, crowding her confusion for supremacy. She tried to ignore the burning sensation in the pit of her empty stomach.
How could he be the wrong man, when no other had ever taken the time to show her the tenderness and passion he'd shared so openly? She trembled as the memory of the past twenty-four hours assailed her. No, she couldn't call Paul the wrong man. Far too many things about him were so very right.
So perfect.
"Damn." She kicked at a loose stone on the cave floor, watching it skitter along and roll into the fire. How had she gotten into this predicament? Not only was she sexually involved with a man who needed intensive psychiatric care, but she'd traveled back in time with him to complicate matters even more.
