"Married?" Bets' s quavering voice rose to a higher pitch of indignation. She stubbed out her cigarette in an ashtray on the kitchen counter, beside a ratty old dish towel.
"Yes, Mum. That's what I said." Kitty sighed and crossed her arms. "Why else on earth would I wear a ring like this?"
"With no warning?" said Bets. "Not so much as a phone call to say he's popping the question? It's rude, Kitty. Rude and inconsiderate, that's what I say."
She plopped a shepherd's pie onto the table, ignoring the fact that its gravy slopped over one side and onto the cotton tablecloth. "Honestly, I thought your bloke was more the gentlemanly type. Thought he'd at least have the decency to ask your uncle for your hand before stealin' away to the other side of the world with you to do it." She dug a pie server from a jumble of silverware in a drawer.
"Uncle Phil?" said Kitty, with derision. "Why should his opinion matter? Stole twenty quid off you last month, I know for a fact."
"It was a loan, Kitty. He'll pay it back, when he has the chance."
Kitty snorted at this. "As for the rest of that lot, they can sod off," she answered, vehemently. "When were they ever interested in what was best for me? At least Nathan had the decency to put up with them for as long as he did."
"Kitty!" Bets sounded horrified. "How can you talk about your family so? Apologize this instant!"
"Don't go ordering me to apologize, Mum. You know it's true." Kitty ignored the shepherd's pie her mother was dishing out, a lot of vegetables and ground meat swimming in a very greasy gravy. The topmost potatoes were slightly grey and lumpy.
I wished I wasn't here for this, and not just because the shepherd's pie was turning my stomach. Arguments between Kitty and her family were never pleasant to witness, and I'd been present for a few in the past. They were a daily affair in the Alderson household, according to Kitty, which is why they went on speaking to each other despite all the bickering.
My only luck this time was that Phil, Saul, Silas, and the rest of Kitty's uncle's rather shiftless family were absent for the revelation of Kitty's engagement. Kitty's engagement ring might not be safe around them, according to her anecdotes. In the past, her cousins had a habit of 'borrowing' everything from loose notes left on tables to Kitty's motorbike, her only form of transportation. Luckily for her, Kitty had almost as many street smarts, and had learned to defend her possessions from her light-fingered relations.
"Well, Nigel then," said Bets, who seasoned her portion furiously with pepper.
"He's not even my proper stepfather," said Kitty, indignantly. "He's only your boyfriend, Mum."
"He could've asked me," said Bets. "You are my daughter, after all. My own flesh and blood, my only child ... and now he's taking you away, is he?"
"Please, Mum." A little scornful noise from Kitty's throat followed these words.
"I'm only trying to do a mother's duty by protecting you.
