Laissez-Faire

Colonial ideology could be a wavelength of peaks and troughs bordered on either side by absolute limits imposed by institutional control over the colonial venture and flecked—as ever—with the interpositions of antithetical nationalism. The influence of troughs, as well as peaks, catches my eye here. In particular, I am concerned that the analysis to this point has called colonial policy ”ideology” but has failed to develop an idea that not doing policy was also a divination of a subject’s interiority—a way to rule without bullet grazes or administrative decisions about cemetery permits, but still returning a sum of money to the colonial treasury benches with an exacting certainty that indicated foreign control was real and here to stay.
