Chapter Twelve

Lola had often scoffed at women who said things like, “My wedding dress picked me, rather than the other way around.” That is until she experienced what she could only refer to, later, as “divine wedding dress intervention” in the form of a quick trip to Boston with Tommy to help him out with his mother’s house.

For hours on end, she sat in Evelyn Ellis’s study and pored through documents, reading fine prints, studying old photographs, and generally getting dust and grime all over herself. Regardless of how organized people were, regardless of what kind of stickler they were about cleanliness, it seemed that time still had its way with things like thirty-year-old Manila envelopes, regardless.

Tommy groaned around four in the afternoon, stood to his feet, then walked toward the window with his hands on his hips. Lola joined him, gently rubbing the top of his back, feeling all the tension come off his muscles. This was the work of a wife, she knew. She saw the bad, good, and even in-between parts. She saw it all; she knew it well. And she was grateful for it.

“Why don’t I pick us up some sandwiches from that place you like?” Lola breathed the words and then kissed him gently on the arm, just about as high as her lips could reach. “We forgot to eat lunch. I’m sure you’re starving.”

“I don’t know. I can’t think about food.”

“I’ll go grab some sandwiches and some snacks,” Lola affirmed. “And maybe some alcohol. We can work a couple more hours and then crash for the night. You said the freight needs you again in the morning?”

Tommy nodded. “Yes. I should be there around four.”

“Not a problem,” Lola said. “I can take the ferry back to Oak Bluffs and have Audrey pick me up. She and Max are normally awake around six anyway.”

Tommy turned to meet her eyes. He looked disgruntled, obstinate, like a little kid on the verge of a meltdown. “Thank you, Lola.” He grabbed her hand and brought it to his lips, where he kissed it gently. “Thank you for all you’ve done for me. I couldn’t have done this without you.”

Lola stepped out into the fourteen-degree Sunday afternoon and buttoned her coat up to her chin. Tommy’s truck keys jangled in her right hand as she went. It was a rare thing, Tommy allowing her to drive his truck, and she was extra cautious as she drifted out from the driveway and crept down the side street and out toward the main road. Her hands sat at ten and two, and she lifted herself upright, alert, watching every little dog walker, every vehicle half-poised at a stop sign.

Tommy’s favorite sandwich place was located on Marion and belonged to a man called Roy. As luck would have it, there was a fifteen-minute parking spot located just two stores down. Despite the massive nature of Tommy’s truck, Lola managed to parallel park like an expert, so much so that she texted Christine and Susan about it (like the little snotty younger sister she was).
