LOOK AT THE BODIES

Ascara paused at the bottom of the steps, and Magda stopped at her side. The rest of their soldiers followed in a long line, although one remained on the balcony to act as sniper and lookout. She would have liked more soldiers and lookouts, but this was all they had.

Lucinda wanted to join them, but that would never be a good thing. Not with so many infected around. Even if they were lying on the ground, the risk of the purple was just not worth it.

“Not yet, Lucinda,” Ascara called out. She was careful in how she phrased herself. Lucinda didn’t like to be told no to anything. “There is a lot of purple blood around. Let me see how bad it is first and then you can come over.”

Lucinda looked ready to argue, but then she nodded. “I’ll wait here, ready to come down when you give the all-clear then.”

“Thank you.”

“Are they dead?” Hesta called out. She did not look or sound happy. “That was not my intent at all. You know that, don’t you?” Then Evie was by Hesta’s side, offering comfort in that quiet way they had between them.

Ascara stopped at the closest body, and Magda followed her.

“Don’t touch them,” Magda said.

“I won’t. This one is still breathing.” She looked up and shouted so they could hear her on the tower. “He’s alive.”

Magda strode off to one of the other bodies. “This one, too. I think they all are.”

“Bloody hell, Hesta, I think you broke them all and put them to sleep,” Ascara shouted.

The soldiers spread out across the clearing and checked those that had fallen.

“Mind the blood. It’s everywhere, although I can’t see any open wounds,” Magda said.

Ascara looked up at the balcony, happy and relieved that Lucinda had stayed where she was. They were in the middle of the horde, and even if the infected looked harmless and laid out like this, their blood and bodies were still a threat. “There is a lot of blood on the ground. Best stay there for the moment.”

“Be careful,” Magda said.

The soldiers were very careful as they stepped around the bodies. They were so interested in the bodies near them they seemed to forget the area around the clearing. But thankfully, there were no others rushing out. Not yet.

Ascara's eyes shifted to Evie and Hesta. “Medical assistance required.”

Evie and Hesta made their way down the steps and joined her at the first body. “Any chance we can find our old camp? I have my medical kit close to our tent,” Evie said.

“It’s too risky just now,” Magda said.

“I’ll do what I can,” she said. She stood still and scanned the area. “At quick glance I think they are all alive. If any of them did not make it, then that is the exception rather than the rule.” She turned to Hesta. “I don’t think it is because of anything you have done.”

“Thank the Mother of us all,” Hesta said.

“Can they be healed?” Magda asked.

Evie kneeled
