Osprey listened to the report and then waved her hand, dismissing the informant. She was getting tired. On a good day, she’d hear ten, maybe more, intelligence, operations, and informant reports. The sheer amount of information was difficult to handle and often much of it contradicted earlier reports. She knew she must be satisfied with a sense of things instead of a perfect picture. That level of awareness wasn’t feasible.
Osprey, she hated the code name. had stopped counting birthdays many years ago. Others guessed or said they knew her age and to avoid arguments she agreed with each of them. She did know she was over one hundred and twenty years old and that, while old in the New Republic, she hadn’t yet reached her full life expectancy.
She peered at the time display and then realized she could just ask the question. It was a pride thing. She’d refused to have her eyes replaced a dozen times. Her glasses were thick and unsightly so they stayed hidden in a pocket unless she was alone.
“Time?” She asked.
“The time is seven forty-seven in the evening. The temperature is…”
“Stop! I didn’t ask you about the damn weather.” Osprey hated most modern technology but she really disliked the data response system in this building. It had an attitude.
The portal slid open and Nicholas entered Osprey’s headquarters. He wasn’t expected and Osprey didn’t like surprises. “What the hell do you want?” She growled. “Ever hear of making an appointment? I’m not running a restaurant here!”
Nicholas stood quietly, letting Osprey’s irritation flow over him. He didn’t respond. “Well? I asked you a question!” Osprey’s voice lost energy as she spoke. She was doing too much and she knew it.
“Phillip was attacked at one of our safe houses by a counterintelligence strike team.”
“Is he…”
“Phillip is fine. He’s safe here in the compound. He was protecting a woman, she’s also safe.”
“A woman?” Osprey said absentmindedly. “What woman is this?”
“Phillip was watching over her as a favor to Logan. He went with Dawson on a bounce and won’t be back for a few days. This woman, her name is Rowyn, is a time Technician who apparently helped Logan in some critical way. He owes her. Anyway, Phillip volunteered to protect her but the government figured out he was using the safe house and conducted a hit.”
“No friendly injuries?”
Nicholas shook his head. “No, Phillip took out two of the men and this Rowyn sliced and diced the third man with a Japanese katana.”
Osprey perked up. She liked strong women. She was a great admirer of the two warrior twins, Tara and Taylor who were training her people. “Is she a guild warrior too?”
“No, I don’t believe so. She’s had informal training at the guild, part of the deal with Logan. Apparently, Phillip has been tutoring her daily.”
“Tutoring you say? Are these two paired?” Osprey didn’t really care about the answer. She was only curious about this strange woman. “A time technician and a killer? She might be useful.”
Nicholas waited until she finished speaking.
