Singing' don't worry (don't worry) 'bout a thing
'Cause every little thing gonna be alright
The young boy had reverted to sucking his thumb and he didn’t care which one of his cousins saw it. The rest of her grandchildren had gravitated toward her where her soothing tones and lilting song comforted them.
Scott didn’t interrupt upon his return. He simply tied the rope around his waist and Sam’s.
His mother-in-law handed the boy off to him and said, “Your legs and feet are stronger and surer-footed than mine, you’ll need to carry him.”
Then she proceeded to organize the remaining four grandchildren so the order went oldest, youngest, oldest, and youngest and looped the rope around them.
Once she was finished, she instructed everyone.
“OK, guys. Here’s the deal,” she began. “We’re gonna go to Aunt Heather’s and Uncle Carlos’ house. It’s stronger than Grandpa Josh’s house and it’s not surrounded by a forest of trees. We’re gonna walk at a normal pace as best we can. The winds are gonna be strong and the rain might hurt a little bit… but you guys are tough enough to handle a little wind and rain. Now, if someone falls or slips, the person in front of them and behind them needs to quickly help them up. Do you understand?”
Fervent nods were received all around.
“Once we get there,” Sam continued. “We’ll light some candles and start a fire and try to dry your clothes. We’ll borrow some of their clothes until we can retrieve some extras for you.”
The youngest of the four older grandchildren sniffled loudly. Tristan’s head was buried in the crook of Scott’s neck.
“Everybody ready?” Scott asked as he placed his hand on the doorknob.
The children turned toward him. His son and daughter nodded reluctantly.
Scott barely turned the knob before a gust of wind blew the door open into his waiting face. The force of the impact split his nose open and smashed into Tristan’s tiny shoulder sending them both tumbling. The toddler wailed out in pain as Scott groaned. Blood flew through the air on the back of a sixty-five mile an hour wind splattering on everyone and everything. When the door swung fully open, it slammed into the wall with such force that all nine of the glass panes shattered. Minute shards of glass hurtled through the room nicking everyone’s exposed skin drawing little droplets of blood.
Sam immediately rushed over to the injured pair, dragging the closest grandchild tethered to her. As soon as she touched Tristan he wailed louder.
“I think he’s broken something. We need to get him to Basilia’s!” she hollered over the roaring wind. “Gimme your belt!”
What Sam didn’t know was that Scott, beyond the outward display of blood oozing from his split nose, was also concussed. The man was incapable of thinking clearly at all. When he didn’t respond, she looked down on him. His eyes rolled back in his head. The man was unconscious.
Thinking quickly, Sam unbuckled his belt and pulled and pulled until it was free from the loops.
