Chapter 9

Julie and I got up early the next morning. As I was getting dressed, I heard hammering outside and, looking out the window, I saw that Apache had dragged out a stack of plywood and 2” x 4” boards, and was sawing and hammering away. He had the beginnings of the framework for a ramp leading up from a path to the front door of Jeff and Charlie’s trailer. He was currently working on making him a big landing/deck where he could turn a wheelchair to get inside, or easily wheel himself outside to just sit if he wished. I thought the deck was a great idea, and wondered why nobody had thought of it sooner. Maybe we could build everyone a deck of some kind where people could sit and have the feeling of community.

It reminded me of growing up and seeing people just sit on their porches and wave at their neighbors as they walked by. It had felt like it drew people into a community back then, and I had cherished those moments. It also reminded me of visiting my family from Harlan County, Kentucky. Us kids would sit on the porch and play as the adults talked and gossiped. Neighbors really were your extended family back then. Many people rarely traveled more than a few miles from their homes; some never did their entire lives, and they were happy and content. It also reminded me that I needed to go see Maude and her children, and check on how Danny was doing. I couldn’t thank her enough for the help she’d given us in helping to take care of Jeff. I definitely needed to stop at her house.

I grabbed a couple of biscuits and some sausage as I passed through the kitchen. Mary was up as usual making breakfast, and today she had two of the single mothers helping her. With all the additional mouths to feed, not even Mary could have kept up with the sheer volume of food that needed to be fixed. Bear was sitting at the table eating a couple of eggs and a mountain of sausage. We had been experimenting with making our own sausage with the help of a retired butcher in town. Even though we had quite a bit stored up already from our prior preparations before the CME, it went fast with the amount of people we had at the farm now.

That was one reason I had been thinking about sending out hunting parties. A few deer, a bear, and a couple of wild turkeys would not only be a great addition to our supply situation, but also a welcome change from our usual food staples. Even beef gets old if you eat it almost every meal.

I sat at the table next to the big guy. “What’s up, Bear?”

“Just taking a quick break. Apache and I are building Jeff a ramp in front of his house. I got hungry, so thought I’d pop in and get me a snack.
