Chapter Twenty
Isabella greets me eagerly the following morning. âHow did it go?â
âIt was great,â I say. âWe had the most amazing day.â
âI knew you would! Iâm so glad you two have got together.â
âGot together?â I say. âWhat are you talking about? I went to keep him company while he took some photographs, thatâs all.â
Her face falls. âI thought you had an amazing day.â
I open the till and check we have enough change to start the day. âWe did. But people can have a wonderful time without it meaning anything more than that. Will and I are just friends. Thatâs all weâll ever be.â
âI donât see why. Heâs a great guy.â
âHe is,â I say. âAnd heâs single. As are you. Which makes you perfect for each other.â
She pours us both a cup of coffee. âThatâs ridiculous. Plenty of people are single. It doesnât mean I have to get together with them just because Iâm single too.â
âExactly,â I say.
She laughs. âPoint taken. But I didnât think youâd be good together because youâre both single, although that obviously makes it a lot easier. I thought it because you get along so well.â
âAs do you,â I point out.
âBut Iâve already told you Iâm not interested in him.â
âAnd now Iâm telling you that neither am I. Poor Will. How is he going to cope?â
The doorbell jangles, and I spin around to see who it is. It would be just my luck for Will to be standing there, having overheard my last comment. But itâs a woman I havenât seen before.
âHello, Mrs Carson,â says Isabella.
The woman beams at her. âHow are you today, my dear?â
âVery well, thanks,â says Isabella. âHowâs Daisy?â
The name Carson rings a bell. This must be Lilyâs mother. She catches sight of me and beams again.
âYou must be Olivia! Itâs lovely to meet you. Lily told me youâre kindly helping out while sheâs away. Daisy is much better, thank you, Isabella. Iâm about to pop over to see how she and Lily are doing after their first night at home. I thought Iâd pick up a little something to take with me. What do you suggest?â
âAs her godmother, I can tell you Daisy loves our brownies,â says Isabella. âSo does Lily. Iâd better give you a boxful in case Jack is around too.â
âI think Iâll take one of your apple turnovers,â says Mrs Carson. âDaisy loves those. She gets the cream everywhere, but I always clean her up before Lily gets home, so sheâs none the wiser.â
âDaisy is lucky to have a godmother and grandmother who understand her so well,â says Isabella.
âAnd how are you settling into Honeywell?â Mrs Carson asks me. âPlease let me know if thereâs anything you need.â
âIâm not exactly settling in,â I say with a glance at Isabella. âIâm only here temporarily. But thank you for the offer.â
âYouâre staying with Eleanor Marsh, arenât you?â
âThatâs right,â I say. âHow did you know?â
âAngela knows everyone in this village,â says Isabella. âHow long have you and Martin lived here?â
âThirty-five years,â says Mrs Carson.
