Chapter Twenty

Isabella greets me eagerly the following morning. ‘How did it go?’

‘It was great,’ I say. ‘We had the most amazing day.’

‘I knew you would! I’m so glad you two have got together.’

‘Got together?’ I say. ‘What are you talking about? I went to keep him company while he took some photographs, that’s all.’

Her face falls. ‘I thought you had an amazing day.’

I open the till and check we have enough change to start the day. ‘We did. But people can have a wonderful time without it meaning anything more than that. Will and I are just friends. That’s all we’ll ever be.’

‘I don’t see why. He’s a great guy.’

‘He is,’ I say. ‘And he’s single. As are you. Which makes you perfect for each other.’

She pours us both a cup of coffee. ‘That’s ridiculous. Plenty of people are single. It doesn’t mean I have to get together with them just because I’m single too.’

‘Exactly,’ I say.

She laughs. ‘Point taken. But I didn’t think you’d be good together because you’re both single, although that obviously makes it a lot easier. I thought it because you get along so well.’

‘As do you,’ I point out.

‘But I’ve already told you I’m not interested in him.’

‘And now I’m telling you that neither am I. Poor Will. How is he going to cope?’

The doorbell jangles, and I spin around to see who it is. It would be just my luck for Will to be standing there, having overheard my last comment. But it’s a woman I haven’t seen before.

‘Hello, Mrs Carson,’ says Isabella.

The woman beams at her. ‘How are you today, my dear?’

‘Very well, thanks,’ says Isabella. ‘How’s Daisy?’

The name Carson rings a bell. This must be Lily’s mother. She catches sight of me and beams again.

‘You must be Olivia! It’s lovely to meet you. Lily told me you’re kindly helping out while she’s away. Daisy is much better, thank you, Isabella. I’m about to pop over to see how she and Lily are doing after their first night at home. I thought I’d pick up a little something to take with me. What do you suggest?’

‘As her godmother, I can tell you Daisy loves our brownies,’ says Isabella. ‘So does Lily. I’d better give you a boxful in case Jack is around too.’

‘I think I’ll take one of your apple turnovers,’ says Mrs Carson. ‘Daisy loves those. She gets the cream everywhere, but I always clean her up before Lily gets home, so she’s none the wiser.’

‘Daisy is lucky to have a godmother and grandmother who understand her so well,’ says Isabella.

‘And how are you settling into Honeywell?’ Mrs Carson asks me. ‘Please let me know if there’s anything you need.’

‘I’m not exactly settling in,’ I say with a glance at Isabella. ‘I’m only here temporarily. But thank you for the offer.’

‘You’re staying with Eleanor Marsh, aren’t you?’

‘That’s right,’ I say. ‘How did you know?’

‘Angela knows everyone in this village,’ says Isabella. ‘How long have you and Martin lived here?’

‘Thirty-five years,’ says Mrs Carson.
