Jack looked slightly to his side, where the bartender stood holding a long-barrelled blaster aimed at the head of the Rajnack. “I don’t want any trouble here,” the bartender yelled.

The Rajnack grinned. “You don’t stand a chance,” she bellowed. All her friends chuckled.

“Maybe not, but do you feel like dying to prove your point. Because you’re getting my first shot, even if it’s my last!”

The Rajnack looked around and thought better of it. “All right, all right.” Then she motioned with a hand to her friends, and they brought their hands away from their hips slowly.

The bartender swung her blaster over slightly and aimed at Jack. “You too, Earthling. Don’t do anything stupid.”

Jack brought his hands up halfway. “I’m cool. No problem.”

“Everyone stay frosty, and no one gets hurt,” the barkeeper said.

“I can see we’re not welcome here,” the Rajnack growled. “We’re going.”

She moved towards the front, shoving tables and chairs over as she walked towards the door. Her friends started to follow, but then she stopped and paused, as if considering something.

And then suddenly she turned, shoved Jack to the side and grabbed Crush by the collar of her tunic and picked her up, pulling her out of Asteed’s embrace.

Crush, helpless in the grip of the much larger Rajnack, dangled a few feet from the ground, screaming and kicking her legs. “You look like you’d make a fine serechi,” the Rajnack said.

And then, faster than Jack could wonder what a serechi was, she turned and galloped towards the exit, holding Crush over a massive shoulder.

Instinctively Jack went for his Ruger, but then thought better of it and stopped. A shootout here and now, outnumbered and with no cover, would only get them all killed.

“Let her go!” Asteed shouted and jumped up from his chair. He started to follow the Rajnack, but Jack quickly reached over and grabbed him by a shoulder.

“Easy does it pal,” Jack said. “You’re not going anywhere.”

Asteed twisted and tried to break Jack’s grip, but Jack had a firm hold on the smaller Amenni’s tunic. “But they’ve got Crush, we have to go after them,” Asteed cried.

“And we will, but not like this.”

The other Rajnack followed the first one out the door. They could hear Crush screaming from the street outside through the open door.

“Why’d you stop me?” Asteed asked.

“Do you want to rescue her, or just get yourself killed. First, we get some reinforcements. Then we come up with a plan that won’t result in us all getting killed. If we just run out after them now, we’ll just get shot down in the street. They’ve got us badly outnumbered, and Rajnack don’t kid around when it comes to a fight.”

The barkeep placed her weapon down on the counter and scowled. “Everyone frosty?”

Donna relaxed. “I’m good,” she said.

The other Amenni who’d been sitting with Asteed jumped up and rushed towards the front door with a blaster in hand.

“Stop!” The barkeeper shouted. “Don’t go out there!”

He reached it in two long bounces and stepped out the door.
