Chapter 16: Alexander
I woke up and looked at the clock to see that it was nine, though I couldnât tell for a moment what day it was. I let my eyes focus, looked out the window to see that it was dark, which meant I had slept for the entire afternoon. I got out of bed, irritated, wincing when my body shifted and I felt the wound in my side. I ignored it as I left my bedroom and went downstairs to the kitchen to get a glass of water. I saw Rose there, sitting at the table, hands folded in front of her. She looked up at me when I walked in and I looked away from her, going to the cabinet to get a glass.
âIs this it from now on?â I heard her ask from behind me.
âWhat are you talking about?â
âYouâve gone back to being this cold assholeââ
âExcuse me?â I asked, swiveling around to look at her. âYou tried to kill me. You got close to me with the intention of killing me, did you not?â
âI told you, I had to,â she said.
âThatâs fine. It happened, and now itâs over. As soon as I get this taken care of, you can go home.â
âTo the place where you killed my friend?â she asked. I huffed at her, setting my glass down hard on the counter.
âHe tried to kill me first. Why?â
âProbably to keep him from having to kill me. Oliver sent him to kill us both because I was taking too long.â
âWhy did it take so long? You could have done it at any time,â I said to her. She stared at my face, looking into my eyes.
âYou made it too hard for me,â she said softly. âYou loved me, and Iââ
I let out a sharp laugh, going to the table, leaning down to look her in the eye.
âI do not love you. I donât even know you. I didnât love you, anyway. That was just a lie to get you to spread your legs for me,â I said to her, the words pouring out of me, filled with hatred and spite. âIt worked. And it was so fucking easy. Itâs always been easy with you.â
âFuck you,â she hissed at me. I glared at her, angrier than I had ever been. Normally when I was angry, I went cold and calm. With Rose, I couldnât help but to lose control and get heated, especially now.
âYou already did that,â I said to her. She got up and stormed away without another word, going into the guest room. I tried to steady my anger as I poured myself a glass of water, taking a long drink of it before putting it down.
âAlex,â came my brotherâs voice from behind me. âThat was way out of line.â
I looked at him over my shoulder.
âSheâs out of line.â
âYou donât talk to her like that. Mom would beat your ass if she heard you talk to a woman that way.â
I sighed, rubbing my hand over my mouth.
