A Two-Horse Title Race
SATURDAY, 2 January; the day that separated the men from the boys. Rangers may have beaten Celtic by just a solitary goal, scored by Trevor Steven, but the victory moved the Light Blues eight points clear of their cross-city rivals – and with two games in hand. In the days of just two points for a win, it effectively left Celtic requiring a six-game swing to make up the ground necessary to mount a genuine title challenge.
But the bottom line was that Celtic’s challenge was over. Rangers were going great guns, in the middle of a 29-game unbeaten record and looked highly unlikely to drop anywhere close to 12 points in the run-in. Allied to the fact that the most credible challenge was now expected to come from Aberdeen or Hearts and you can see why it was easy to discount Celtic as a credible contender.
And Bomber Brown proved he was over his recent ‘labour problems’ by turning in a five-star display against Celtic. He said, ‘I had a few days when I had quite a lot of pain in certain areas of the stomach and they thought it was my appendix, but when I went to hospital they didn’t deem it serious enough to take it out. They tested a few other things but couldn’t find anything wrong, so whether it was the appendix and it has now settled down, I don’t know.
‘Big “Elvis” [Steven] Pressley did very well in my absence so I was pleased to get back into the team for the Old Firm game. Our performance against Celtic could have been better. There were spells when we were knocking the ball about, but we let it go and Celtic came at us and gave us a few problems. But the important thing is we know we can improve and it’s another two crucial points, so we can’t complain too much.
‘As long as we keep getting the results, I’m sure everyone will be happy come the end of the season, although we always like to put on a better show at home. And it’s another New Year when we’ve got a result against Celtic so we’re all chuffed to bits.’
Andy Goram backed up Bomber’s mantra that sometimes points were more important than performance, and said, ‘We’ve taken a bit of stick for our displays against Celtic, but we’re still good enough to beat them even when we’re struggling.
‘The standards everyone expects from Rangers are so high and I must admit it’s difficult to keep every performance at such a level. We’ve had so many games to play and some of the pitches we’ve played on haven’t been great so it’s unrealistic to expect great football all the time.
‘Don’t get me wrong, though, no one here simply wants to struggle through every match, even if we do keep on winning, but hopefully the Celtic game was a one-off and we can get back to playing well again and continue our successful run.
‘The most pleasing aspect
