Katherine took care of tasks around the house for the rest of the morning. Play time with six kittens was high on her list. Now five weeks old, they were becoming strong and independent and played constantly when they were not napping. In another three weeks it would be time to send them off to their new homes. Kat and Philippe were thrilled they were not going far away. Simone was going to take one, and Gilles and Christian had chosen the two they wanted. Adorée was going to take one to live with her in Sainte-Mathilde. From the beginning, Kat had felt a strong connection to the runt of the litter and she and Philippe had decided she would stay with them. She had thrived as time went by and was now the troublemaker of the group, always wrestling with her siblings. They decided to call her Bijou after Kat declared one day that she was a gem.

Philippe had a soft spot for the only pure black kitten in the litter. He had started calling him Bonbon, after his favorite black licorice, and it was an easy decision to keep him too.

After a light lunch, Kat took Coco and Rocco for a walk. She went briskly with them on leash along the winding streets over the Cap and down to a small beach where the dogs could play in the sea. On the way back, she kept to the route that she and Philippe had established. It was well away from traffic and the dogs could walk free. Like most well-trained dogs, they chose to stay close to her. All three ended up at Simone’s in the afternoon.

The dogs raced to the back garden to visit Victor Hugo and the Twins, and Katherine went inside to the kitchen.

Simone made tea, and Kat told her about what had happened on the motorcycle ride. It upset her to remember it, and Simone gave her a hug and spoke to her soothingly, encouraging her to follow Philippe’s advice.

“I understand how difficult it is not to obsess about Delphine. I have been struggling with that too. But our anxiety and concerns will not make anything better. We have to believe that the police are working on this and will find her.”

“I understand all that, but my emotions about this are so unpredictable,” Kat said. “There are times when I feel almost normal and then suddenly I fall apart. I remember how I felt when I was dealing with my sudden divorce and after my mother died, but this is different because so much is unknown.”

“The unknown is what is so difficult to process. Our imaginations take us to very dark places, no question,” Simone said.

Katherine described the meeting she had attended with Élise in Nice. “I can’t even begin to mention the stories I heard. To think that Delphine might be caught up in anything like that again just makes me crazy. It was bad enough to know from what she told Raymond Albert that she had once been held captive in that sordid world.
