Chapter 8

It was out. The story was out and there was no way he could call it back. It didn’t matter any longer if Seren told the truth in her article. Colton’s lawyer and his public relations company were going to have their work cut out for them. The worst of it was, because the phones had been out, he hadn’t even had a chance to call his team. Except for the message he’d left for his lawyer last night, this would be the first inkling they’d had that something was wrong. They’d expect it was all a hoax staged by an overzealous reporter. He couldn’t imagine their reaction when he told them it was all a mistake, but that it was also all true.

Seren was still crouched over his shoulder reading. She sat back on her heels. “I’m so sorry, Colton. This is all my fault.”

He turned to face her. “It’s not your fault. You didn’t entrap me. You asked me honestly if I’d pose for your photo. And I agreed. I had no idea that other reporter was going to scoop your story.”

“Well, she did.”

He didn’t have anything else to say but that. His attention was stolen by the thought of all the calls he was going to have to make. All the explaining he was going to have to do. All the media releases and all the legal wrangling. It was enough to make his head spin. All he’d wanted was a holiday. Now he had a legal mess and a media circus. “Now that everyone knows who I am and where I am, the media will descend on this place and ruin everyone’s holiday. I’m probably not the only one here who doesn’t want his identity known.”

Seren sat back further on the bed. His words seemed to deflate her. She leaned against the headboard and sighed. “Once again, all I can say is I’m sorry, Colton.”

He hadn’t meant to hurt her. It wasn’t her fault. She hadn’t known who he was and he hadn’t seen the harm in helping them out. He leaned toward her and ran a hand down the side of her face. “I didn’t mean that it was your fault, Seren. It’s not. It’s just the intersection of two odd mistakes. The reporter snagged a photo of me on her phone and the priest didn’t get the message that we weren’t the couple slated to get married that day.”

Her face brightened a little at that. “Things like that shouldn’t even happen. It’s like something out of a movie.”

“They have happened, so now I need to talk to my lawyer and my media company and see what can be done. Which is going to mean a trek back to the front desk. Hopefully, not everyone has seen the paper yet and I can do it in peace. You can get some breakfast if you like.”

“I’m going to have to make a call to my editor, too. I’d better give her a head’s up about what’s happened.
