Chapter 8
It was out. The story was out and there was no way he could call it back. It didnât matter any longer if Seren told the truth in her article. Coltonâs lawyer and his public relations company were going to have their work cut out for them. The worst of it was, because the phones had been out, he hadnât even had a chance to call his team. Except for the message heâd left for his lawyer last night, this would be the first inkling theyâd had that something was wrong. Theyâd expect it was all a hoax staged by an overzealous reporter. He couldnât imagine their reaction when he told them it was all a mistake, but that it was also all true.
Seren was still crouched over his shoulder reading. She sat back on her heels. âIâm so sorry, Colton. This is all my fault.â
He turned to face her. âItâs not your fault. You didnât entrap me. You asked me honestly if Iâd pose for your photo. And I agreed. I had no idea that other reporter was going to scoop your story.â
âWell, she did.â
He didnât have anything else to say but that. His attention was stolen by the thought of all the calls he was going to have to make. All the explaining he was going to have to do. All the media releases and all the legal wrangling. It was enough to make his head spin. All heâd wanted was a holiday. Now he had a legal mess and a media circus. âNow that everyone knows who I am and where I am, the media will descend on this place and ruin everyoneâs holiday. Iâm probably not the only one here who doesnât want his identity known.â
Seren sat back further on the bed. His words seemed to deflate her. She leaned against the headboard and sighed. âOnce again, all I can say is Iâm sorry, Colton.â
He hadnât meant to hurt her. It wasnât her fault. She hadnât known who he was and he hadnât seen the harm in helping them out. He leaned toward her and ran a hand down the side of her face. âI didnât mean that it was your fault, Seren. Itâs not. Itâs just the intersection of two odd mistakes. The reporter snagged a photo of me on her phone and the priest didnât get the message that we werenât the couple slated to get married that day.â
Her face brightened a little at that. âThings like that shouldnât even happen. Itâs like something out of a movie.â
âThey have happened, so now I need to talk to my lawyer and my media company and see what can be done. Which is going to mean a trek back to the front desk. Hopefully, not everyone has seen the paper yet and I can do it in peace. You can get some breakfast if you like.â
âIâm going to have to make a call to my editor, too. Iâd better give her a headâs up about whatâs happened.
