To Pay: Pagare

Lucia calls up with a half dozen eggs from her chickens. I think she is afraid I cannot feed Ronan.

"The town hall called the notary who called me saying that they understand you are not Italian so you probably do not understand the taxes that need to be paid on the house, but they see you have paid no taxes on the house like the IMU that is due to be paid by June and the garbage tax TARI.

"They want to explain to you the taxes you have to pay as an owner, but of course nobody there speaks English. I didn't want to fight with them but I was so angry and I said 'is there not one person who speaks English in the town hall, in a town where a lot of English speakers come to live?' It is ridiculous. Anyway, this is urgent."

Lucia automatically starts cleaning my kitchen. "I am sorry. I am fighting with Alessandro, so I need to clean. It's what we Italian women do to get rid of stress and I have nothing left to clean in my house."

I am perfectly okay with her using my house as her stress ball. She has done this before. Everyone should have a stressed Lucia in their lives. I put on the kettle and get back to the urgent matter she has called in about. "We are living in Italy. It is perfectly okay if they don't speak English. But I am confused about their message. I tried to get bins, and they said I can't as we are not resident. And we never got a property tax bill. I do not know why they don't email me like they have done before about an issue?"

"She did not contact you directly as she is embarrassed she can't speak English. Anyway, the first appointment available is on Wednesday at 9am, so on Wednesday we have to go to the town hall. It is very important, she says it is very urgent. I think they are nice as they give you no fine. If it was the other town, they would have sent you a lawsuit by now and a fine.

"But, in your town, they understand that you have to learn the taxes. But I am sincerely shocked that your commercialista has not done this. This person has to take care of your taxes. I will fire him if I were you."

"I can't fire my commercialista, as I don't have one."

"Then get one. It is important, so they help you with your taxes."

By asking around the yogis, as Ronan calls my yoga group, Shelly recommends a commercialista who is English but has worked here for thirty years. I call and book a consultation with her to try to figure out what taxes we need to pay and how to go forward with my business if I do become a resident.

Wednesday arrives. Lucia calls me, "I cannot go, my baby goose is ill and I need to bring her to the emergency room, but my father will go with you to the commune for the tax meeting.
