GRETTA ROLLED HER SHOULDERS, trying to ease the knots that held them stiff. But the only thing she accomplished was intensifying the ache.

But maybe her body would finally relax a little. Zeche seemed to have turned the corner, sometime after she’d helped him drink another cup of her tonic in the wee hours of the morning. When she’d checked on him this morning, some of the color had returned to his face, and the lines at his eyes weren’t as pinched. His breathing was deeper, more relaxed.

Maybe she was grasping at any hope she could find, but...he was better, something in her heart told her so.

She used her apron to protect her hand as she grabbed the coffee pot from the hearth and carried it to refill the men’s cups at the table.

“I’m awful obliged for your hospitality, Miss Michelly.” Mr. Olsen tipped his chin. “You, too, sir. Can’t remember when I’ve enjoyed a visit quite as much as this one. The vittles, especially.” He raised his empty fork in salute as he sent her a smile.

“Stop by any time you’re in the area, Magnus. And we’ve been known to house a man during a blizzard every now and then.” Father glanced toward Zeche’s bed, but Gretta forced her gaze not to follow.

It seemed almost sacrilegious to compare Zeche’s presence in their home to Mr. Olsen’s. Zeche was a dear friend, not some stranger who wandered in. Her heart cried that Zeche was so much more than a friend. But then again, they’d known him less than a week, if she counted the total of the days they’d spent together.

Yet he was...Zeche. Part of her couldn’t imagine a time without him.

Forcing her mind back to their guest, she filled her father’s mug then glanced at Mr. Olsen. “I’ll pack a satchel with that elk meat I promised, and some lunch, too.”

He leaned back and patted his midsection. “My belly appreciates it.” He gave her another one of those disarming smiles, like an overgrown boy. His cheeks had a reddish hue above the curly brown scruff of his beard. An all-around pleasant sort of fellow. Which was good, because it sounded like he might be back for more visits in the future.

Would having a regular guest be a problem for Father? He hadn’t suffered any of his attacks while Mr. Olsen had stayed with them. Not for days before that, either. Maybe he was settling into the changes with Zeche’s injuries. She could only hope.

“Well, I’m headed out to see to the animals. I’ll give yours another helping of corn, Magnus.” Father pushed from the table and headed toward the door.

Mr. Olsen stood too. “Thanks, I’ll be out as soon as I gather my things.”

Gretta turned back to her work counter. She’d best get that food packed for him.

He stowed his things in his satchel while she gathered the meat she’d promised, plus cornbread left over from last night’s dinner and dried fruit paste, which would be a nice treat for him.
