Eilish worried about all the cleaning she was going to have to do after all of this was over. They gathered in the back room, the smell of bleach making her head ache. Frank opened the door while the others stood ready to rush it, should any infected try get in. “It’s clear.”

He stepped into the storm, not giving them time for second guessing. Don’t get left behind. She knew if she was alone when this started, she would just have curled up behind the counter. Their escape was cloaked by the heavy rain. Puddles were massing into ponds and the usually quiet gurgle of the drainage ditch behind the garage now sounded like rapids.

Spiked metal fences surrounded the car park. We’re trapped.

Eilish heard the infected clambering over the car that had stalled on the road. If not for them, we’d all be dead right now. A growing number of alarms haunted the night. How widespread is this?

Derek opened the door of the truck and lifted the bags of food in before helping the others up. Grace pulled the curtain of the cabin back and sat on the bed. Eilish took the passenger’s seat beside Frank, while Derek sat behind the wheel. Eilish felt like she could not breathe properly until the door was closed.

“We’re not all going to fit,” Matthew said.

“You’re welcome to wait in your own van,” Derek said.

“Does the TV work?” Grace asked.

They all crammed into the back of the cab to look at the small screen. Before turning it on, Derek unplugged his neon Liverpool sign. News played on all the channels. It did not matter which station he tuned into, they all said the same thing: Ireland was under attack.

“I can’t get through to my wife,” Frank said.

A government warning flashed across the screen, becoming more apocalyptic as the night progressed.
