Chapter Nine

The End of the Beginning

Most of my life, to that point, had been a crazy, chaotic ride. Attention to detail hadn’t exactly been my forte, and everything from child support paperwork, (I’d been giving Sarah cash but had never filled out the official forms) to tax returns were in a mess.

Rhonda patiently and graciously worked through everything with me. It was a process of dusting myself off in every area of life and putting things right.

And when – after a long distressing year I was finally reunited with my two children, everything was right.

While sorting out my life, Tommy Robinson had gotten in touch, offering me the chance to work for TR News, an alternate media company he had created. He loved my way of weaving in comedy and banter to serious political and social issues. I immediately accepted his offer.

I loved working for Tommy, but it was very chaotic because he was, and still is, quite literally an enemy of the state. In fact, “Enemy of the State” was his first book title, and it was no lie.

You never knew when Tommy would be imprisoned and have all his accounts frozen. It meant that most of Tommy’s team in the UK was more focused on handling crises than developing media content, so I often felt like I was a one-man team.

But having said that, Tommy was a great boss, and I still consider him a good mate.

Our lives and backgrounds could not be more different. Tommy was a soccer hooligan who became an activist and then a media proprietor, so there is no denying he had a rough side. But everything they claim about him – being racist, a thug and whatever else - is just completely false. In my opinion, he is one of the most persecuted people in the UK.

A lot of Tommy’s experiences resonate with me. I was wrongly arrested three times before Victoria Police were, through court action forced to finally issue me with a grovelling apology. I know what it’s like to have the authorities go after you.

I also know what it’s like to have terrible things said about you, and how tiring it is to defend your reputation. I’m not saying Tommy’s an angel. He isn’t. I’m just saying that he’s a top bloke; nothing like how he’s portrayed in the media.

While they painted Tommy as a thug, I never saw him start a fight. I did witness him finish them, though. And I think the distinction is essential.

He was always getting physically attacked by people underestimating him due to his size. Tommy is small. No, actually, forget what I told you earlier, that “Tommy is possibly smaller than me”. I need to get this off my chest. Tommy is tiny. A lot of people don’t know that about Tommy Robinson, but I want to go on record as saying that he is even shorter than me!

Gosh, that feels better.

Seriously though, in the first week I met Tommy, he walked into a restaurant near Luton looking for something to wrap his knuckles in.
