Chapter Eleven

QUESTIONING THE VILLAGERS had turned up nothing. No one had seen the spear or had any idea who would have taken it or why. Some responded with shock and horror. Some expressed outrage. Some disinterest. Even Victory could offer them nothing. It was frustrating to say the least.

“We’re at a dead end here,” Zala said to Xander. “I think it’s time we head to the aeries.”

“I agree. Maybe we’ll get some answers there.”

“Maybe.” Although Zala wasn’t so sure that was where their answers lay. The whole Angel angle stunk to high heaven as far as she was concerned. She tapped into the ship’s coms. “Audley, you find anything on the Rage or the Treaty?”

“Hey, boss. Nothing on this Rage thing, but I got more details on the Treaty.”

“Okay, does it say anything about Syndicate reps visiting the aeries?” Most treaties the Syndicate made with other species included details on how representatives should approach those species. Everything from how they should dress to the kind of gifts they should bring.

“Nothin’ much,” Audley admitted. “Only thing is that humans from the planet stay out. Period. Reps are allowed. Period. No details on how to approach. Sorry, boss.”

“Thanks anyway.” She signed off. She would have liked to be better prepared before going in. “We’ll need better gear. Flight suits are great for rain, but they won’t stand up to the hike.”

“I stowed some gear on the transporter before we came down. You just never know when it’ll come in handy.”

“Oh, really. How clever of you.”

He shot her a wink before heading down the path toward their shuttlecraft. It looked like he’d gotten over being pissed at her. At least she hoped so.

They were passing the Eden house when Victory tumbled out the door and dashed across the yard toward them. “Wait!” She waved frantically. “I want to go with you.”

“You can’t,” Zala said.

“Sure I can. It’s not that far and I’m strong.” She didn’t say “stronger than you,” but it was in her tone. “I’ve hiked a lot, and I’ve been camping loads of times. I can do this.”

“It isn’t about you being able to hike or camp,” Zala assured her. “It’s about the Angels.”

Victory gave her a baffled look. “What about them?”

“Your people made an agreement. No human Serabim in the aeries. Do you want your presence to start a war?”

Victory blanched at that. “Of course not. But you guys are going. Right? You’re human. Least ways I hope so.”

“We’re not of Serabim. We’re Syndicate. We have a different agreement with the Angels.” Hopefully the Angels still remembered it. Otherwise they were up a proverbial shit creek without a hyper drive.

“They won’t know I’m of Serabim. We can tell them I’m one of your crew.”

“That would be lying, and the Angels would know it.” Zala had no idea if the Angels would know any such thing, but she couldn’t let the girl go with them. It was far too dangerous. “Do you want to put your people in danger? Your family?”

Victory sighed.
