The morning following her dining catastrophe with Mark, Evelyn seriously considered missing work. Surely a confused and battered heart qualified as sickness. The thought of facing Mark and trying to work with him exhausted her.

Evelyn didn’t think she could pretend nothing had happened, even though technically nothing had. Mark hadn’t kissed her.

No, he’d just lowered his head within a millimeter of her lips, then retreated to her cheek.

Who was she fooling?

The only reason a man like Mark retreated was if she didn’t match his criteria in some way. Or because he still cared for Paige. But how could he after last night? After hours tossing and turning, Evelyn remained unsettled. She needed to ask Mark some tough questions, the kind she’d rather ignore. But her heart wouldn’t let her. No, she needed the truth. Did she fail his unspoken criteria, or did he love Paige and had he merely toyed with her? The possible answers scared her, but she had to know.

“Evelyn Happ, snap awake.” Vivian stood in front of her bunk and pulled the covers back. “Get up. The government doesn’t care why you’re moping.”

Lonnie walked out of the bathroom. “Next.”

“You’re right.” Somehow she’d face the man. At least machines acted in a rational manner. “Don’t worry about me, Viv. I’ll be fine.”

Viv didn’t look convinced. “That settles it. I’m arranging a weekend filled with fun, activities, and dates. You need to get away from Mark Miller for a while.”

“Fine.” Evelyn didn’t have time to focus Viv on something else. She’d go along this weekend. “But right now, I need to fly.”

Evelyn hurried through her morning routine and raced to the marching area, arriving in time to join the formation. A moment later, they started the march down the hill to NCR. When a man headed in the opposite direction pulled over and offered a ride to any WAVES who wanted one, Evelyn was sorely tempted. Instead, she kept her eyes locked forward.

If only she could do that the balance of the day and avoid any run-ins with Mark. Then the day would be a success.

Meader marched into Adam’s room, a magazine under his arm. Mark braced for the daily barrage of reasons the project wasn’t moving fast enough as Meader slapped the most recent issue of Life on the table. Mark winced when he saw the cover. Several soldiers carried a casket draped with an American flag. He knew from reading his mom’s copy that the inside contained a list of American dead in the war. He didn’t want to think how the list would grow between the early July issue and the end of hostilities.

“Gentlemen, this is precisely why your efforts are not good enough.” Meader jabbed a finger on the photo of the coffin. His face was red as he strode to tower over a seated Desch. “You must get the machines working. Now! Any more delays and our efforts will be pulled by Washington. We are out of time.” He looked at each person in the room, then spun on his heel and left, leaving the magazine on the table.
