The Kids

Eugene, Oregon

7 p.m.

Gavin Keith, a tall, handsome guy with a boyish smile and charm, knocked on the front door of the house of Bill’s daughter. He had a small backpack on. Being a track star, Gavin ran across the town to get to the house and was out of breath. The zombies ran pretty fast, but not as fast as Gavin. He pounded on the front door three times.

Katie, a tall girl with blonde hair that was pulled back, cracked the door open. It took her a second to recognize Gavin. She grew up next to him, but once she and her mom relocated to Eugene, she never saw him much at all. Even with them both going to the University of Oregon, they might exchange a glance once or twice a year when they noticed each other.

“Gavin, what are you doing? You better come inside right now,” Katie said.

Gavin went inside, and Katie locked the door.

“My dad called me and told me to come, make sure you and your mom are safe. Our dads are coming to get us,” Gavin said.

“How did he call you, the phones are working?” Katie asked.

Gavin pulled out his sat phone.

“My dad has one like this. Another one of his inventions.”

“So, you said our dads are coming together. That sounds crazy.”

“I know, I hope they don’t kill each other on the way up. Is your mom here?”

“Yeah, she is upstairs sleeping. This whole virus thing is making her anxiety flare-up. So are we going to stay here until they show up?”

“This seems as good as anywhere else. Zombie shouldn’t be able to get in here.”
