TASHA

Sometimes, the best way to help someone

is just to be near them.

~Veronica Roth

I’m reading Love’s Tender Kiss, curled up on my sofa, making notes to myself as I go. It’s no Amelie De Pierre novel, but it’s not half-bad. We’ll be recording in less than two weeks, so I need to have a feel for the characters, the plot, where to pause, and how to use my voice in different places in the story.

My phone rings. I recognize the number by now. Stuart. Ever since Pierre told Stuart I agreed to the marriage, I’ve been receiving calls from him several times a day.

“Hello, Stuart.”

“Don’t sound so excited, Tasha.”

“I’ll try to tone it down. What can I do for you?”

“Well, we’ve got a plan. You and Pierre need to get to know one another. You know, like what one another’s favorite colors are, quirks, hobbies, interests, backstory. All the things real fiancés know about one another.”

I can’t help my sigh. It’s not that I don’t want to know more about Pierre. I love hearing about his life—about him. It’s just all this third-party meddling by Stuart and Bob is already getting old. It will die down once we’re married. At least Pierre assures me it will.

“What do you want us to do?”

“We’ve booked you a stay at the Old Edwards Inn in Highlands.”

“Ooooh. That’s a posh location.”

“Oh. Wait. No. Sorry. Here it is. I’m staying at Old Edwards. You and Pierre are going to be at the Mountain Peak Treehouse Resort.”

“Treehouse Resort?”

“Yeah. You stay in a treehouse. Like Tarzan and Jane.” Stuart chuckles. Then he actually makes an “oooh oooh, ahh ahh,” noise like he’s a gorilla, and then he chuckles some more.

“Why aren’t you staying in a treehouse?”

“Well, for one thing, you and Pierre need your privacy. And, for another, I’m not really the treehouse type. I’m more of the, Sir, your hot stone massage is at two p.m. type. Besides, my absence will give you all the privacy you need to really get to know one another. Consider this a crash course in dating your fiancé. Privacy will enhance you getting to know one another. And you’ll have three whole days alone together, well, except for the photographer we’ve hired.”

“Photographer?”

“You know what they say. If you didn’t photograph it, it didn’t happen. We’ve got one of the top event photographers in North Carolina meeting you at River’s Peak to capture the moments.”

“Capture the moments.”

“Are you just going to echo everything I say?”

“Maybe. What exactly does capturing the moments entail?”

“You know. You and Pierre go about your weekend, and Godiva will follow you around to capture the moments: the two of you holding hands, looking in one another’s eyes, kissing, going down the forest zipline strapped to one another. You know, the basics. All those convincing images will tell the world Pierre has found the love of his life in you. Your photos on Marbella set the stage. These will solidify the story.”

Kissing? He did say kissing. I’m supposed to
