Sutherland glanced over as Hodges drove them toward the bunker. He had slept some the night before, more than he would have expected, and his dreams had been of his wife. It brought a smile to his face when he woke up.

They had found a truck, a MTVR, in the motor pool after an hour of looking. The keys luckily had been on the driver’s seat and they had left the base without incident. Sutherland felt blessed that their journey had been easy with the exception of the people shooting at them in Toronto. He kept thinking something would go horribly wrong, but they were about an hour away from the bunker and he had started to feel he was actually going to make it back from the mission alive.

Sutherland still hadn't decided what to tell Rodgers about Wheeler. The truth was he had left without saying anything… but Sutherland had started to wonder if it even mattered. He didn't blame Wheeler—taking back the bunker at District Four had taken its toll on the man, not to mention losing all his unit members along the way.

“Sir?”

“Yes?” Sutherland said.

“Sorry… you looked deep in thought, but I wanted to make sure we were still heading in the right direction.”

“Yeah… I'll let you know when to turn.”

They were already off the main road and headed toward the forest.

“Sir?”

“Hodges… you don't have to address me every time you need to ask me a question.”

“Sorry. I… I was just wondering… do you think you might be able to find a place for me at the bunker?”

“I don't see why not. Is that what you want?”

“I think so.”

“Well, make sure and let me know. I'm sure Vice Regent Rodgers would be more than glad to get a pilot… and she would probably find some place for you to put that plane of yours. It's a valuable tool that's quite hard to come by these days.”

“Thank you,” Hodges said. “I really appreciate you taking me with you.”

“Thank you… I wouldn’t have been able to make it here without you.”

Sutherland looked over at Hodges, who had a proud look on his face. He reminded Sutherland a little of Avery, the young man who had flown them west. It had nothing to do with their appearance, but rather that they were both young men who seemed so ready to help their country and put themselves in danger to be able fulfill their duties.

“Just be prepared for a different way of life,” Sutherland said, “if you decide to stay at the bunker.”

“Why? What are they doing there?”

“Like I told you yesterday, the country is divided into these districts. I'm not sure, since I've been gone, exactly what they are doing at One… but they are responsible for defense, so I would imagine much of what they are doing is planning for the future.”

“Right. Do you… never mind.”

“You can ask me anything,” Sutherland said. “I'm not sure I'll have an answer, but you can most certainly ask.”

“I was just wondering what
