But that was not the only problem, for Ben seemed to be ever more rebellious. Over the following weeks he became increasingly agitated, forming some sort of unlikely alliance with Andy, Julie, Ryan, and surprisingly, even Michelle. He wanted to move away from the scene of the tragedy and suggested they look for new premises. Roy explained, again and again, that they had already looked for other places and had decided on Zingari as the most practical. Yet Ben was unmoved and at the meeting the next day the discussion recommenced.
“Just tell me why we can’t look?” Ben asked of Taylor again.
“We can look. I have always said that the majority vote rules. I’m not the chief here, but I can cast a deciding vote,” he reiterated.
“Good, we can start tomorrow,” Ben shot back, and left it at that.
There was a short embarrassing silence before business moved on to other matters.
On the Wednesday the community split into four groups to once again scout the city for possible locations. They covered the plains to the west of the city, the northern coast, the peninsula and the city suburbs once again. Just before nightfall they gathered in the meeting area to discuss what they had found, but there was nothing new. The same candidates were the castle, the school, and the multilevel retirement home on the cliffs down near the beach; all of which were previously inspected. Each location had more room but not as much ground to plant out. The most spectacular was the castle and its surrounding accommodation and land. The problem was that it was exposed and susceptible to cold winds and fog. The next best was the retirement home, but in the end there just did not seem to be any advantage in changing places to live.
Ben continued to insist they move to a better location, contending the retirement home was the best place to be. They argued back and forth over two days and Ben eventually convinced Michelle to join the four others to move there.
“Michelle, you have to realize that Taylor wants to run everything.”
“Ben, I’ve seen all he does. He isn’t overbearing like you say he is!”
“He doesn’t appear to be, but look at the sway he has over the others. No one questions any decision he makes.”
“But Ben, he doesn’t decide…we all do!” she insisted.
“No Michelle, think about it. The we you talk about is always them. You, me, Andy and Ryan…we have never been able to make decisions. Even Michael’s ideas are chosen over ours. Julie is with me… I mean us! We need to split if they don’t agree with us. We’ll show them that we are able to make our own lives too. Come with us,” he pleaded.
Michelle’s emotions since the fire were a factor in her finally eventually siding with Ben when they voted on whether to move as a community. Ben knew no one else would come, and was ready to leave anyway. That afternoon they all visited each place to have a closer look once again.
