There was a bit more that Alex needed to discuss with Karen, but he left the Police Department about fifteen minutes after concluding their conversation. He planned to eventually head back to the Dauntless. However, before he could leave, he wanted to make sure that his sister, Nyx, Ariel, and Michelle were doing well, which was why he took a shuttle to the Outer District.

Fortune smiled on him. His house was still in one piece. As he walked through the front door, took off his shoes, and called out his traditional “I'm home!”, the sound of rushing feet hit his ears seconds before the living room door opened.

Alice was the one who came out first, followed by Ariel and Michelle. Nyx came out last. She paused when she spotted him, but then she moved fully into the hallway and stood behind the others.

“You’re back.” Alice looked behind him as though searching for something. She clenched her fists so tightly that the knuckles turned white.

“Jasmine is still on the Dauntless,” Alex said, knowing exactly who she was looking for. He didn’t tell her that her friend was having drugs flushed out of her system. If Jasmine wanted to, then fine, but worrying his sister when she was already fretting over this wouldn’t help. He gave her a reassuring smile instead. “You don't have to worry.”

“What makes you think I was looking for Jasmine? I wasn't interested in knowing that,” Alice said, looking away.

“That so? Then I guess you won’t be joining me when I go back up there?”

“I never said that.”

Alex chuckled at how obvious Alice was. Her left foot was tapping against the floor and her arms were crossed as though defensive, but the way she glanced at him, the telling look in her eye, pretty much told him everything he needed to know. The moment he said he was going back to the Dauntless, she would subtly demand to go with him. He wouldn’t be surprised if she claimed that it would be more troublesome to not make sure Jasmine was okay than to stay at home.

Really, my sister is so adorable when she gets like that.

“I’m pleased to hear that your mission was a success,” Michelle said.

“Yeah, it was surprisingly easy to accomplish with Azazel’s help,” Alex admitted.

“Well, Azazel is Father’s best general,” Ariel stated. “That was the reason he was brought on as Big Sis’s bodyguard.”

Alex nodded. He hadn’t really thought much of Azazel at first. Sure, the guy had kicked his butt when they first met, but he had also bawled like a child during Alex's speech, kept getting lost when given simple tasks, and didn’t seem to know his left from his right. That said, when the cards were on the table, Azazel and his two men, Kane and Abel, decimated an entire security detail, around three hundred wardroids, practically on their own.

“Anyway, Jasmine and Gabby are still on the Dauntless,” Alex said. “I’m gonna call Azazel and have him send a shuttle to pick
