Nick didn’t know who was looking more forward to Carly’s visit—he or his daughter. She’d been talking about it ever since he picked her up from school, excited that she’d have the best cookies at the party because one of the “Sunrise Sisters” was going to be baking them with her.

He pushed back a wave of apprehension. It had been years since Liz’s announcement that she needed to “find herself” and “work on herself”, and even though Daisy had adjusted and was rarely seen without a smile on her face, he was there for the confusion, the questions, about why they were moving and her mother wasn’t joining them. He saw the way his daughter’s eyes still lit up every time Liz called or sent an overpriced gift. Guilt gifts, that’s what he called them.

And he also wiped away the tears when Liz left again.

The visits were both good and bad, and for this reason, he hadn’t told Daisy yet about Liz’s intentions. He’d wait until there were actual plans—and then brace himself for the fallout when she left again.

He hated the way Liz sailed in and out of their lives as much as Daisy craved it. Hated that he couldn’t protect his daughter from the inevitable disappointment. But he could protect her against more hurt.

And for that reason, he hoped that she didn’t become too attached to Carly.

He told himself that it was just cookie-baking. That Daisy was friendly with almost everyone in town. That this was no different.

But it felt different, to him, and when the doorbell rang at four and he walked down the hallway to see Carly standing behind the glass-paned door, smiling back at him, he realized that the heart that really needed protecting was his own.

She was just in town for a visit. And he was here to stay.

He opened the door. The vision of her standing on his front stoop felt strange but right all at the same time. How many times after first moving back to Hope Hollow had he kept an eye out for her, passing by all their old favorite spots, happy for any reports her family was willing to share?

But she never came back to town and eventually, he stopped believing she ever would.

Now, he realized he’d never stopped hoping.

“Hello,” he said, welcoming her inside. He ran his gaze over her as she set her bag down on the bench where Daisy always sat to tie her shoes. Carly’s light brown hair fell at her shoulders, gracing her collarbone, and the green top she wore brought out hints of the same color in her eyes.

“What a cute house!”

He gave a modest shrug. “It’s small but it works.”

“It has window boxes,” Carly added.

Nick rolled back on his heels. “I know.” And that was the first thing he’d said when he’d seen the listing. It was what had drawn him to this place. He’d never noticed details like that before, but whenever he was out with Carly, she made sure to point them out.
