Chapter Eleven

Could Max keep a promise? The question rifled through Heather’s mind. But that doubt paled in comparison to the nameless reason for the way she’d kissed him. Sure she’d let herself care too much about him, but that kiss had taken things to a whole new level—a level she wasn’t sure she was ready to deal with.

That was one amazing kiss. She’d asked herself over and over again why Brittany had stuck with Max for so many years. Heather was finding more and more reasons for Brittany’s attachment to him. The pieces were all beginning to fit together. Despite his faults, there was a great deal to like about Max Reynolds, and it had nothing to do with the way he kissed. That was just an added bonus.

Heather took a shaky breath. “I’m not sure that would be a good idea. You’re tired, and I don’t know what I’m doing.”

“I do. You’re coming with me, and we’re going to talk this through. I suddenly feel not quite so tired.”

Max reached out his hand and took hers. She didn’t resist as he led her up the steps and into the house. After he put the eggs in the fridge, he sat on the couch and brought her with him. For a few seconds, they sat side-by-side without talking. Heather wasn’t sure what to say. She wasn’t making any sense of what he’d done tonight.

Scooting forward on the couch, Heather turned to Max. “Last night you said you were still in love with Brittany. If that’s so, why did you kiss me?”

Max blinked, then laid his head back against the couch. A muscle worked in his jaw as he stared into space. He said nothing.

“Rebound?” Heather watched for his reaction.

“I’d hardly call two years after the breakup a rebound.”

“Have you dated anyone since your breakup with Brittany?”

Max turned his head without lifting it from the back of the couch, his gaze narrow. “No.”

“So maybe I’m right. It’s a rebound, and you don’t want to admit it.”

He finally sat up straight as he shook his head. “I...” He released a harsh breath and closed his eyes. “Maybe I overstated my feelings for Brittany. I only know it still hurts, but I want to move on in the worst way.”

“So you’re using me to get over your hurt? Kissing me to make you forget?”

Max opened his eyes, his expression guarded. “No, I don’t go around kissing women for the fun of it or to help me forget anything.” Max waved a hand back and forth between them, then rested a finger on his chest. “As hard as it is to explain, I’ve had this crazy need to stay connected with you even though you reminded me of the hurt, didn’t like me, kept telling me what to do.”

Max’s words were far from comforting. Doubts and questions crowded her mind like the cancer cells that invaded Max’s body. Was this all about his cancer? Was he reaching out to her because he was one
